MARGAO: Any nation does not become a great one by development only, but it also
needs human and psychological growth and this can only be achieved by culture
and
the arts, felt the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat.

Mr Kamat made these observations while speaking at the inaugural function of
renowned poet, the late Balkrishna Bhagwant Borkar or ‘Bakibab Borkar’ birth
centenary celebrations at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao on Sunday. Mr Kamat said the
government is striving to bring about both intellectual development along with
socio-economic development of the people.

Mr Kamat, who is the president of the centenary celebration committee as well
as the
Art and Culture Minister, said poet Borkar was a man with towering personality
and
had contributed immensely to enrich Marathi literature. “People who contribute
to
literature, art and other walks of life help to develop a civilised society and
so
it is the bounden duty of society to remember them,” he said, expressing his
satisfaction and saying that they (he and his government) were lucky as they
could
celebrate this landmark.

Veteran poet and lyricist, Manguesh Padgaonkar who inaugurated the function,
began
by saying that Bakibab’s poetry was unique and it had a great ‘effect’ on
persons
who listened to it. Saying that Borkar’s life was a poem and his personality
multidimensional and “there was music in his words,” he added that after the
famous
Maharashtra poet Nyaneshwar, it was Bakibab.

“Bakibab loved me like a mother and father,” he reminisced saying that he first
met
him in 1943 when he (Padgaonkar) was 14 years old. “I first met him then and
first
heard his poem,” he said recollecting that based on that poem he had composed
another poem. And when Bakibab read it he told everyone that I would be a great
poet.

Saying that he had met Bakibab some 50 years back and had learnt a lot from
him,
famous writer Madhu Manguesh Karnik marvelled that what others could not
explain in
3-4 pages, Bakibab could within one line. He said that Bakibab was a nature
lover as
well as a great artist. Damodar Mauzo welcomed the gathering, Mr Datta Naik
spoke
giving details while Dr Rupa Chari compered the function.
