Sharin Wader, a journalist and resident of Goa, is planning to make her wedding
the
first carbon neutral wedding in the country. It will take place in December
this
year.

In recent months, Pope Benedict has made several strong appeals for the
protection
of the environment.

“For every ton of carbon dioxide our wedding generates, we plan to offset the
same
through the purchase of carbon offsets,” said her fiancé, Kishore Butani, who
is
already keeping track of the carbon emissions related to wedding pre-planning,
visits to the in-laws and shopping for outfits.

Emissions due to transportation by the guests attending the church ceremony and
wedding reception, right down to the power used by the wedding band and even
emissions related to the transportation of the decorations to the wedding venue
will
be tracked.

Carbon offset provider, CARBONyatra.com will help the couple calculate their
emissions and provide them with offsets to have a carbon neutral wedding.
Emissions
will be tracked from the engagement ceremony in August till the wedding in
December.
“Typically, a wedding will emit 100 tons of carbon dioxide. We are looking to
purchase 400 tons since we are tracking the emissions from the engagement stage
itself,” said Kishore.
