A little while ago, while watching NDTV, I was witness to Shantaram Naik, our lively Congress Rajya Sabha MP, being torn to pieces by Barkha Dutt, as he tried to argue that women should a) not travel out at night and b) not associate with strangers at late hours.
This was in the context of a Russian woman being allegedly raped by a very very Goan - Christian - election - contesting - gentleman. This is the same case regarding which our best politician Micky Pacheco had declared that Goa was the rape capital of India, since the culprit concerned was a political opponent. I wonder what impact this story will have upon people intending to come to Goa. No doubt there are those who will opine that if they do not come then that will be a good thing. I am not so sure about this. One aspect about this issue really depresses me. Is it a fact that visitors to Goa are as unsafe as the media, aided and abetted by our inane politicians, make it out to be? We all, but especially our media, need to be clear about what is happening. Are we really so bad?? Sad to say I suspect we are.
