Well said Joebab. And thanks for giving us the snippets about the cassette. The
front cover is certainly distasteful.
Everyone seems to have jumped the bandwagon, albeit justly, in condemning the
violent fall-out in the Colva CD case, even labelling it as 'talibanisation',
thus shifting the focus from the misdoings of the producer of the cassette.
Yes, what has happened, undoubtedly is unfortunate. It only goes to show how
deeply the faithful hold their priests in reverence.Let us spare a thought for
them. The holy priesthood is an institution, instituted by Christ himself. The
ordained priest officiating as the sheperd of the flock is a representative of
the Christ for anyone to be used as a political football. That some of them
have stumbled and erred in their pastoral ministry doesnt give us any greater
right to malign, belittle or demean them. So have we umpteen times.
Standing at the altar before the Eucharist, his only authority stems from his
moral uprightness. If that too is sought to be undermined by some serious
allegations that would compromise his standing in the eyes of the
congregation, the onus of proving the allegations beyond a shadow of doubt
falls squarely on the shoulders of the one making that charge.
Obviously there are avenues available to redress any grievances against the
clergy or their misdemeanours. Stooping to the street level and using such a
crude method so as to 'expose' him is certainly not one of them, that too
without a shred of evidence. It cannot be a matter one's 'right' to free
expression as some of us are led to believe. It is both pusillanimous and
reprehensible to indulge in such cheap gimmicks under the cover of 'fictitious'
names.
Did the producer make any serious effort to produce proof of his errant ways to
the pastoral council or to the higher-ups in the hierachy? If he felt aggrieved
it was his bounden duty as a member of the parish to do so, even conscientising
the laity about the need to arrest the culpable ways of the priest. The
parishioners indeed would be grateful if it is proven that public funds are
siphoned off to follow private pursuits.
But by resorting to insinuations and slander, he has in a way invited the
trouble, however unjustifiable it is.It is a work of a scoundrel to settle
political scores vitiating the public sphere. Shows the level of perfidy we
have all sunk into.
Do hope the New Year brings in renewed hope and peace for all.
J Mario Fernandes.
