Garbage dumping in an abandoned quarry in Orgao

Loads of garbage has been dumped in an abandoned quarry in the village of Orgao
near Marcela from the Tivrem Orgao Village Panchayat in Ponda Taluka. The
quantity and content of the garbage indicates that its a collection of garbage
from a collection point, which has been quietly dumped here for a long time now.
It is shocking as the garbage has been dumped in an ecologically sensitive
area. During the monsoons, the abandoned laterite stone quarry serves as a
natural rain water harvesting site and feeds many wells and fields in the
low-lying villages of Tivrem and Orgao throughout the year.
There are also incidences of household garbage being dumped along the roadside
and in the abandoned quarry on the outskirts of Tivrem & Orgao by morning
walkers from the neighbouring town of Marcela. This illegal dumping of garbage
is seen as a threat to the environment and ecological balance of the two
villages.
Off late, the local youth have been vigilant to prevent any such dumping of
garbage. However they feel it is not possible to monitor the area full time and
more awareness is required to arrive at a permanent solution to the problem.
