The members of the Konkani association got together to celebrate and remember the Unique Opinion Poll day of 1967 that was held to decide the fate of Goa whether to remain as a separate state or merge with Maharastra. In the begining President of the International Voice for Romi Konknni Mr.Eujean Floriano Fernandes reminded that the unique Opinion Poll was forced upon Goa to decide the future of Goa. The opposition leader of the then legislature assembly Dr. Jack de Sequeira took the risk and met the leaders of the then central Govt.to have the voting so that people of Goa can vote for their future and fate of Goa. Dr. Sequeira along with other members of the United Goans Party like Teotonio Pereira, Mr.Sarmalkar, Babu Naik, Dr.Wilfred D'Souza and others supported and organized many leaders in different villages of Goa. He further said that Goans were lucky to have with them a selfless and powerful leader in the form of Dr.Jack de Sequeira. He managed to convince the Goan masses that the Identity of Goa has to be safeguarded at any cost and Goa should not be merged into Maharastra.The voting was held on this day and the unique opinion poll of free India was held and won by Goans to save the Konkani language and separate Identity for Goa. Secretary of the IVRK Mr. Domnic Carvalho was all praised and remember Dr. Sequeira as the true Goan whose heart and thoughts were always in favour of Goa. He mentioned some important points of his speeches during the opinion poll meetings which Dr. Sequeira used to put deep into the Goan hearts so that they realize and vote for TWO LEAVES. HE cited some slogans of the Opinion poll like Maharastra Zalach Pahije from the mergerist forces and Goa Zalach Pahije from the true Goans. Treasurer Mr. Filipe Barreto from Kairali Quepem suggested and urge Goa Govt. that the history of the Opinion Poll -1967 should be recorded in the school books so that the younger generation should be taught and remembered the role played by our leaders in 1967 during the opinion poll.. He also urged the Govt. to print out some books of this historic day and distribute it to all the Panchayats, libraries and schools all over Goa. In the end the members demanded that the Govt. should erect a life size statue of Dr.Jack de Sequeira at a prominent place for the great role that he played to safe guard the Identity of Goa during the opinion Poll-1967.
