ZAGOR usually staged on village feast days and other annual days. It is basically a song-musical-dance-fancy dressed including wearing of tree branches , of leaves, flowers etc It’s colourful often too much of red, and hence we have a konkani saying ‘Tamdde Zagor’ When a person dress colourful or over the top, we may describe it as ‘zagor’ or ‘tamdde Zagor’ (if red). Zagor has two forms Christian and Hindu Zagor (see some Hindu clips) Christian zagor, it was essentially from Kunnbi/Gauddi Community. ZAGOR is basically a message or a gossip based on true facts and hear-say in the form of songs. Zagor is all about dress & Songs. Message from lowers section of the community to higher or elite section. It often talk about Bhatkar,Portuguese, Regidor, mukdom etc. There is no limit on what one may say or dress, so it is essentially an adult entertainment. There were no females actors. Males dressed as female. It may talk about Bhatkar e.g. ‘Bakra baban munddkraghe cheddvak pirddar kelem’ (Jr. Landlord raped tenant’s daughter’ ‘Bhakraghe bhail pakleako bori asa’ (Landlord’s wife having affair with Portuguese (white) Audience mainly of Kunnbi Cummunity with few Sudras. http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk11/2229697865/sizes/o/ On the other hand, KHELL (Zomnivoile Khell) is sort of One act Folk Play each lasting about 30-45 minutes. Khell means Canrival Khell (and Easter Khell) Which means, Khell only performed say Max. 6-14 days in a year. During and just before Carnival or Intruz and again during Eater week. Khell essentially means at least two acts or more And we call it ‘Partio’ (Part(i), being singular). There was a time, they used to give up to 5 ‘partio’ But now, it is always 3, sometimes all 3 finished in 2 hours. Each parti (act) will have separate story and song/music. The next parti will be entirely of different topic. Khell also essentially mean Musical Khell (Play) With brass band like full drum set, trumpet, clarinet or Sax and banjo. Khell played on ground (with no stage or curtains or Podde) Locals used to form a circle (full circle), the the artists performed In the middle/centre. They too sat in a circle and rise up as and when their role comes up, To go to one house to another Or going from one actor to another in the circle, a music was played to indicate this. http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk17/3305127818/sizes/l/ Audience at a 'Khell' Typicall, it is like this (an actor will stand up) ‘Antam hanv kit kotolom? Bhoinnighe oitolom ani todde poixe magtolom’ (What would I do now? I’ll go to my sister’s and borrow some money’ The sister (man dressed as a female) who was sitting is now rise up. Now, the role is in between the brother and the sister, only two of them will be seen Standing in the circle. Instead of one act, it will now have say 6-8 acts as one single story./drama. It will have songs, Canto related to the story.
