There are many Moidekars with nick names, but these are/were wll known personalities:
TAMDO ANTON, DOVO ANTON, PISSO CAETAN, XANO CAETAN: were attending the Catecism in the Moira Church, so the curate gave them these nicknames. LORD FORSU: Used to dress well, always with hat in the mornings and cap in the evenings, with cigar in his mouth and thick walking stick. MODECAR BOSTEAO: had a shop in Mapusa and the shop's name was Moidecar. KODKODDI BOSTEAO: used to walk with a shaky style. FOREST SOUZA: used to work for the Forest Department. PILLOOC SOUZA: was a good singer with a fine Suprano voice. SIR BAUTIST: like his brother Lord Forsu, used to dress well, but had a commanding voice and was a strict sort of man. GOD-DAM PASCU: often used to get irritated and would say "God-dam". BOSTEAOS: Duke Bosteao, Thonto Bosteao, Pom Pom Bosteao, Nouro Bosteao. JOSES: Sonso Jose, Vega Jose. FORSUS: Foko Forsu, Ponso Forsu, Gamnu Forsu. JOAOS; Daunro Joao, Thonto Joao, Polkist Joao. From: Villagers of Moira (Toronto), Silver Jubilee 1971-1996 souvenir FOOTNOTE: The Canada-based artist and author Mel D'Souza has also put together a list of nicknames from Saligao. I guess every village has such names (except, most are just part of the oral culture). Some border on the offensive, of course :-) More news and posts from Moira: http://groups.google.com/group/moira-net -- Frederick Noronha Columnist :: journalism :: editing :: alt.publishing :: photography :: blogging
