If in the long run wrong papers are ignored then no damage is done to science
in the long run. The only damage that is done is to the reputation of the
scientist who was stupid, careless or crooked enough to publish the wrong
result in the first place. I would say that the system is just. In the end
truth prevails. Justice is done.
