Subject: Re: Goan Community Meeting 7 February St Boniface social Club, Tooting

 Hi Everyone

Some of you may be aware that a Group of us met at Sandra & Roque DeSouza’s
suggestion on Sunday the 15th of January at St Boniface Social Club, Tooting to
discuss how we can build a United Goan Community and to explore the possibility
of a Goan Community venue.

Whilst a great part of the meeting focussed on a Community venue, it is fairly
clear to a number of us that we have to be a strong United Community before we
can consider going down the route of securing premises. It would make little
sense to consider one without the other.

I’ve attached the minutes of our meeting on the 17th of January together with
an email below from Sandra & Roque listing a number of issues which we as a
Community may wish to consider and prioritise. The list has been compiled from
suggestions by many Goans with whom Sandra and Roque have met, over the
preceding months. Actually it was a much longer list but to make it more
manageable/workable, it has been shortened!

We want to ensure that no one in the community feels excluded and everyone
feels able to participate in the discussions and process we have begun and
which we hope will achieve some good, positive results and provide us with a
framework we can build on. Let’s try and leave behind our differences and take
on a positive outlook for the future of the Community. So don’t think you have
to be a member of the G.O.A or a Goan Association to join us.

Over the years, we have all experienced a shift/drift in our community. The
community is somewhat fragmented and as a result we’ve been experiencing a loss
in our Goan identity. We risk losing our Goan culture, traditions, food,
language, music, dance and many things which we identify with, as Goans. Should
we continue down this path or ought we to do something to preserve what is good
and worth salvaging?

There are very limited opportunities for young Goans and families to meet
together as a Group and do activities together.
Should we consider having a central venue for Goans to come together or should
we look at more area-based local facilities for Goans to meet?
Should we buy or lease/rent?
These are some of the questions which came up at our first meeting.

We would like to invite the wider Community to participate and invite you to
our next meeting on Sunday 7th February at 3pm at St Boniface Social Club. We
would specially like to hear from those who feel able to contribute their
ideas, suggestions, time and effort in moving the community forward. We’re
also looking for a wide representation of age groups, young, old, middle-aged
and both male and female- children too. The children can have their own
meeting if they wish and tell the grown ups what they would like to see happen!
Or they can bring some indoor games along, including board games and have some
fun together.

It would be nice if you could bring a plate of snacks- crisps, etc so we can
share something together. Drinks however will have to be purchased from the
bar.

Don’t worry if you can’t make it this Sunday. There’s always next month. We
hope to meet on the first Sunday of each month, subject to availability of the
venue. We’ll confirm the March date after this meeting. We also plan to have
workshops at future meetings and perhaps a larger community event at the Church
Hall, if it is possible to do so.

Finally, I hope this email does not prove an inconvenience. However if you
would rather not receive emails on this issue, please let me know and I’ll
exclude you from future emails.

Thank you.

Kind Regards,

Fiona Bina Lobo
Dear All

Meeting 7 February at 3pm at St Boniface Hall, Tooting SW London

List that we could discuss on Sunday (these issues have been brought up by the
community). Try to prioritise for Sunday. Please be free to add to the list.
The only way can think of prioritising this is to put No 1 as top priority
etc. We could have a quick vote on which issues to discuss. If anyone has a
better suggestion we are on a group email. There are a few other people that we
will be sending this to, that did not attend the first meeting but will be
attending Sunday's meeting. We need to seek their approval before adding them
to the group mailing list.

Thank you

Sandra & Roque
