Encroachments in Agonda (Villages under attack)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I am a resident of Agonda (Canacona) and had been to my place for Christmas
celebrations last year and was surprised to see one 'ashram' being built on a
hillock and ‘outsiders’ are running it. I came to know that there has been no
NOC being granted for the construction of this ashram. The structure was built
within a short span - what a big feat and achievement for the authorities who
are responsible behind its development! One has to visit Agonda and witness the
plight of this village-pathetic road conditions, water shortage and electricity
problems. There has been hardly any effort made by the concerned authorities
over the years to improve the condition of the village and of the people but
they are very much headed towards developing Goan villages against the wishes
and interests of our very own people.

Ever since this illegal construction has come to the notice of Canacona
communidade for demolition, those very authorities are now making every effort
to obtain a stay order to protect it. Such remote villages across Goa are
becoming soft and prime targets because they believe that such illegal
constructions would not come to limelight so easily.

Village Panchayats have to play a very big role today realizing the present
tumultuous situations in Goa. They are entrusted to abide by the law and
protect the misuse of our lands and nature. The pen has always been mightier
than the sword. Panchayats must not succumb to any external pressure; be it
mounted on them by local MLAs, investors or influential people.

Our people need to conduct morcha, create awareness among our rural brothers
and sisters to remain vigilant and protest against any illegal construction.
This should be cascaded across villages and aim towards protecting our rich
culture and its heritage. This is a call to all our Goan brethren-arise and be
awake. Stand united and fight against these corrupt elements and help make Goa
a better place. We the true Goans alone have to fight to save Goa till the end.
And victory will be ours always.

Let peace and harmony reign in Goa always!
James Monteiro, Bangalore
