If I remember right, age does take its toll, and memory is the first to pay;
the owners of Café Prakash in Panjim are niz Goemcars. I remember speaking
with the man at the helm, or rather the front desk, long long ago. He told me
how his family escaped to Karnataka to escape persecution and conversion. But
they had always maintained close ties with their ‘mul ganv’ and had made annual
pilgrimages to their village to honour the village deity.

It was fascinating listening as he told, how his entire family clan used to
come over en masse, traversing hundreds of miles, to sweep and clean the
village temple and perform devotional ‘pujas’.
