Well, soccer has certainly taken root in N. America.
The world rankings, below, are from FIFA:     
                Women        Men
USA             1                  12
Canada         12                57
Mexico          22               17


India           Inactive          130 


As far as professional soccer is concerned, there currently are 16 teams in 
Canada and the 
US with two more being added next year. A year or two ago, Beckham was to play 
in a match 
against Toronto F.C. Tickets were being scalped for $500. Admittedly, that is 
cheap compared 
to hockey where a scalper can get close to $1,000 for a ticket to any game of 
the Stanley Cup 
finals.
