Russians assault Chapora man, tension runs high
HERALD CORRESPONDENT
CALANGUTE, FEB 23
Barely days after a Russian fatally attacked a Morjim taxi driver, a group of
Russians assaulted a man from Chapora late Tuesday evening, sparking off
tension in the area.
According to Anjuna police, the incident occurred when one Sanjay Khorjuvenkar
was proceeding in his Qualis jeep (GA-01-R-2373) towards Siolim. While on his
way at Bandirwada-Chapora, few Russian nationals, who were travelling in the
opposite direction, were agitated after assuming that Khorjuvenkar was blocking
their way.
The agitated Russian nationals allegedly stopped Khorjuwekar’s vehicle, dragged
him out of the vehicle and assaulted him. They also threatened and abused him,
besides damaging his vehicle.
Khorjuvenkar claimed that while he ran for his life, the Russians pelted stones
at him, but he had a lucky escape.
Angered over the incident, about 150 locals rushed to the house where the
Russians were putting up and demanded an apology and compensation.
Meantime, in the absence of Anjuna Police Inspector Manjunath Dessai, who was
away at the SP’s office for an official meeting, Assistant Sub Inspector Sham
Naik, who was tipped-off about the situation rushed to the site along with a
police force.
However, the locals were in no mood to listen to the police and remained at the
site till about 7.30 pm. Naik tried to cool down the tempers of both the
warring groups, but a few locals allegedly started abusing the police.
When Dessai arrived at the police station he got in touch with Naik and took
stock of the situation.
However, after a long delay good sense prevailed among the warring factions and
a compromise was worked out while the police force moved out.
