Selma:
Wonderful topic ....... a few contextual titbits on the subject:

The brother of the creater of James Bond Fleming was the Governor of Seychelles ....... His butler was a "Goanese"

I think the Goans had a head start because studying European languages, PPortuguese, English and French was part of the school system in Goa. ...... the fact that they were Christians was a huge advantage ....... in more ways than one ... I am reminded about EM Foster Passage to India ....... the Goans had fewer inhibition about talking to the opposite sex etc.

In Tanganyika ,,,,, Goans actually were in charge of the Catering Department from Day one ..... this meant all the First Class Resturant on the trains plus all the Railway Hotels ...... The catering for our wedding in 1963, well into independence was done by the Railways, there was still a Goan in Charge and what is more there were enough cooking utencils and help to cater for 300 or more people ,,,,,,, About two years ago .....at the Railway Hotel in Dodoma .... yes there was a "Muhindi" from India ....he turned out to be a fellow Goan.

Were there any Goan Barbers in East Africa?

Goans are really all over the world ....... even in Timbuctoo ........ it happened to be me.

In a land beset with communal tensions, Dr Oscar Rebello, who
shot to fame as the man who took on the government and
brought to a halt the proposed Regional Plan, recently
confessed to being an atheist, a very courageous act in a
predominantly religious country but a mindset certainly
welcome in a secular country. Here is a candid interview
with a Goan daily, sent in by JoeGoaUK.
