Today, we see the Congress Party is brimming with joy and happiness, patting
its own back for having fared very well in the ZP elections, so much so, that
it makes Churchill Alemao confident that Congress will romp home if mid-term
assembly elections are declared. And the BJP feels that the rug has been pulled
out from under its feet. However, the Congress as well as the BJP, the NCP
included must realize that the Panchayat, Zilla and the Municipal elections
cannot and must not be considered as feathers in their respective caps because
of the very fact that these are supposed to be non-partisan elections. Consider
Nelly Rodrigues' unopposed election in Colva. The moment she was elected, she
made a move to join NCP. Is this not the betrayal of the trust of the people of
Colva? The Panchayat, Zilla and Municipal office bearers may or may not be
active members of political parties, but they cannot wear political party
arm-bands while in these offices. Because, for God's sake, these are offices of
the self-governing bodies, though political in nature these cannot be partisan.
Otherwise the idiotic show that is going on in the assembly is bound to be
continued and pursued in these self-governing bodies. And, Unfortunate for Goa,
It is happening.
Now consider the contrasting evidence thrown up in the ZP elections in
Poinguinim. The results are as follows:

Now who was Daya Tuko Pagi? Was he the Congress, NCP, MGP, BJP candidate? It is
believed that people were surprised that he should even step forward to
contest elections. There were doubts that he would even save his deposit
without the support of political parties . But Daya Tuko Pagi made it a point
of filing his nomination papers and letting the world know that he is not a
candidate supported by any political party. That he stands on his very own and
by his very own principles, not borrowed principles of political parties. That
he would not be overly bothered if people rejected him completely. And, our
information is that he did not even actively campaign.
But see the results. A whopping 56 per cent. This goes to show that the people
are just hungry for candidates who are not attached to the pariah political
parties in these self-governing body elections. Goa needs to learn a lesson or
two from Mr. Daya Tuko Pagi.
Sir,
The Goa Su-Raj Party salutes you and holds you in highest of esteem. We are
confident that you will not do a bangra dance to the 'fen'kello' tune of the
political parties, just like Nelly Rodrigues and others will do in their time
in the ZP office. If you were a member of the Goa Su-Raj Party, you would have
had to resign from the Party membership and stay unattached until your term in
office was over. Nevertheless, we are solidly and vociferously proud of you and
wish you all the very best. Since you are an outcast without political support,
you can expect no help for your constituency. But we advise you to weather this
contempt in the spirit that you have shown, never to succumb to the offers that
will be coming your way. But should you do that, you will have lost in the eyes
of the people who stood by you and to see you through. Your asset is the
'people's and not what you can do for them.
