A man wanted by the Bangalore police for murder was arrested by the special
squad of Panaji police early Friday morning for moving around in a suspicious
manner in the Panaji bus stand. Raghuraj Vadvi, 44, had gone missing from
Bangalore soon after the murder of his employee Arvind Basavraj on December 7,
2009.
Sources said that Vadvi, who had a chit fund company had employed Basavraj and
took Rs 2 lakh from him for trading in the stock market. "Later, as Basavraj
realized that Vadvi was not returning his money, he started asking him for his
Rs 2 lakh. This angered Vadvi and he murdered Basavraj", said police sources.
Vadvi is not just wanted in a murder case but is also in several cheating cases
and offences under the Thrice Chit Money Circulation Banning Act, 1978. There
are also six non-bailable warrants pending against him in a cheating case of
2006. These non-bailable warrants were issued by the Additional Chief
Metropolitan Magistrate, Bangalore.
One such non-bailable warrant was found in Vadvi's pocket, when the special
squad consisting of PSI Rahul Parab, PSI Tushar Lotlikar, PSI Prajyot Phadte
and head constable Ulhas Khot found him moving in a suspicious manner at the
Kadamba bus stand at Panaji at about 1.45 am on Friday. He was found with three
of his friends – Ramesh Chuahan, 37, Jaman Patil, 28 and Gaidiya Silparo, 36,
moving around aimlessly in the deserted bus stand.
"On searching Vadvi, we found a non-bailable warrant issued against him by a
Bangalore court in a cheating case in his pocket. On inquiry we learnt that he
was wanted by Baswan Gudi police, Bangalore in several cheating cases and even
a murder case of 2009," said Panaji PI Sandesh Chodankar.
Sources said that the Panaji police contacted Baswan Gudi police and learnt
that he was absconding since the murder of 2009 and also that he had jumped
bail in a cheating case. "He had arrived with his friends in Ponda in a tempo
from Bidi, Karnataka on Thursday and reached Panaji in a bus on Thursday night,
when our special squad intercepted him along with his friends and arrested them
for moving in a suspicious manner. They have been remanded to one day police
custody," added PI Chodankar.
A team from Baswan Gudi police station is expected to reach Panaji on Saturday
to take custody of the accused.
