Goan Folk Art Festival organised by Kala Academy Goa on 20th March 2010 at it’s open air hall. It was FREE for all.
We have watched here 2-3 forms of folk art for the first time. (we may have missed some as we arrived there 7.45pm and it was to start at 6.30pm) e.g. Women at field work transplanting and singing their traditional folk songs ‘Geeti Gayan’ (see pic and a clip of all). Then we saw an unique form of singing by men ‘Gudya Gani’ a folk singing tradition mainly from Canacona. Besides, we also saw a sort of Peacock dance called ‘Morulo’. Youngsters mainly males seen dancing with peacock feathers cap on their heads. It also had some of the Goan Popular folk dances such as Gauda Dhalo, Kunnbi dance, Zagor, Ghode modni etc. - see pics/clips We enjoyed every bit of it. Sadly, there were not that many people to watch this fast vanishing folk art. There were more participants and media/Camera men (including me) occupying the seats than the actual audience. The net outcome of which would be just 50 (fifty only) ‘To mee navech’ a Marathi ticketed drama at A/c Hall starting around same time gone houseful though. We must try our best to preserve this form of folk art etc for posterity or future generations or at least for Goa’s sake. School, colleges, social institutions including overseas Goan clubs etc can also play an important role in preserving this fast dying fork art.. It’s part of Goan identity.
