Hi, Goans+ Honorary Goans!

Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas has rendered us his fellow Goans a sterling service by chronicling the brave exploits of Goan Padres in far-flung places all over the Planet including Angola, Mozambique, Capo Verde, ....These are the Goan Padres and Madres who walked in the footsteps of the Patron Saint of Goa: Francis Xavier (who, by the way, was not Portuguese but a Spaniard. There were in Goa not only Portuguese missionaries but also other Europeans: Spanish, French, Italian and other nationalities).

Whilst most Orientals other than Goan hesitated to cross 'the Black Water', we Goans ventured far and wide not merely for economic reasons but also out of a spirit of adventure, curiosity and Apostolic missionarary enthusiasm. It's we Goans who by example taught Asians (except the Chinese) to venture abroad and admire, with awe and wonder, the wondrous world which we dwell in.

Fr. Mascarenhas should be commended for his research and output of Goan History which is tied up to a large extent with the presence of the Portuguese in Goa, Damao, Dui, Coorg, Vellore, Bombay, Madras, Karachi, Bangalore, Calcutta, Travandrum and other countless places on the Subcontinent plus cities like Faro, Lisboa, Beira, Zanzibar, Lourencos Marques, Nairobi and Dar es Salaam. Mention the place: there was a Goan Padre, Madre, Donna Maria or a cook, butler, baker, barber, butcher and candlestickmaker. O no! -- let us not forget the Goans of other professions: landed gentry or Grandees, tailors, empregados, professoras, etc., etc. All of us appreciate Fr. Mascarenhas's reminder of our service to the world in all fields of human activity: spiritual + cultural, educational, political, socioeconomic and so on....Our gratitude to this noble intellectual is boundless.

Dear Mr. Frederick de Noronha,

Thanks for giving Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas a write-up for his recent books! God bless you!

Fr. Mascarenhas should be congratulated for his research especially in these days of cultural genocide. He has made us Goans feel justly proud of our country and culture -- God bless him!

Goan Priests have for 100's of years migrated to various countries e'en before the word globalization had been coined: for, like Goan laymen, they migrated to Brazil, Portugal, Timor, Macau, Singapore, Kenya, Malaya, Tanganyika (Tanzania), Uganda plus other countries worldwide. We should admire them for their courage and spirit of adventure as well as their evangelistic zest. May those who have passed on rest in peace! We say this despite knowing that they are already in Heaven but we are merely reminding them to continue praying for us Goans and other Earthlings.

Thanks a million, Fr. Mascarenhas!

Thanks, Mr. Frederick Noronha for the due publicity you have accorded this outstanding Padre who is recording the glorious History of Goa. May other Goan historians follow in his footsteps!
