Yes, many of Mr. Rodrigues' statements hold true as between the anglo-canadian and the east-asian goan. we, and our offspring, continue to be an enigma, to wit some of the questions/comments my kids are asked by their europeon/canadian born classmates: How come your father does not have curly-hair like an african? (born in Kenya). Your father does not speak like an Indian? ( his english is real english!). do you like lots of curry because your father also says he is Indian? what is goan?. he does not look like a portuguese!!; does he have lots of money, like indians here? ( question from wifes' relatives). How come you have a spanish name? you know, you mixed indians are really top of the line in physical attractiveness!!; Mr. Rodrigues may or may not have experienced the light-skinned female folks swoon over our accent, our gentlemanliness, our skin tone ( although on a another community it becomes a negative colour!!); On the flip side, I continue to be dismayed, disappointed and upset at the aloofness, the non-interest, the strangeness of goan meeting goan, in a business environment: like the goan would rather do business away from and without another goan! too bad and shame.

EASTERN IMMIGRANTS STEEPED IN WESTERN MORES

By Armand Rodrigues
[email protected]

In the assimilation process, most immigrants to Canada, from
the Eastern hemisphere, have had to adapt rapidly to societal
norms within codes of conduct, language nuances and social
interaction, somewhat dissimilar from those they left behind.
Hardly so, for those from the former Portuguese colony of
GOA, in India -- a mere dot on the map of the world.
