Dear friends,
Some Konkani teachers imagine that using some English words lends a boost to
their stature, irrespective of whether what they say makes any sense or not in
English. This is exactly what Salvador Fernandes, the Secretary of Dalgado
Konkani Akademi has done. He has sent this message to Goanet knowing fully
well that the Forum has no facility for posting enclosures. He avers that as
proof of an exhbition of books was in fact held at the recent Romi Konknni
Sommelon, he is sending a photograph, which he advises readers and me to see
until we go blind. He has also sent a cc to me. From the attachment to that,
I find that the photo he has sent is that of a poster or banner which says
"Konknni Pustokancho Mandd" (Stall of Konkani books). He expected that the
readers would imagine that the photo is of a shamiana displaying thousands of
books. Even if someone were to see the photo, an impression would be created
that a large stall exhibiting books lies
behind that banner. Unfortunately for him, Ancy Paladka, not knowing the
devious mind of Salvador, reacted by sending another photograph which shows
just a table on which some twenty or so books are displayed for SALE. Since I
had also attended the Sommelon, I know that was all that was available there.
I do not know whether Salvador understands the difference between 'exhibition'
and 'sale'. I would advise him to visit Golden Heart Emporium, Abade Faria
Road, Margao. Therein he will see thousands of books displayed on tables,
racks and shelves. He may peruse as many books he wishes and buy one, if
satisfied. But does anyone call Golden Heart Emporium an "Exhibition of
Books"? Salvador also quotes only a part of my sentence which was "But in
neither of them was there any exhibition of Konkani books, let alone a nook for
books of SA standard." And I stick to this statement. Let him not try to
bamboozle readers with unverifiable statements;
let him desist from indulging in "suppressio veri, suggestio falsi."
In fact, had the organizers wanted, books should not have been hard to find for
an exhibition. Antonio da Piedade Moraes' Goenkaranchem Daiz Library is within
a stone's throw from Ravindra Bhawan where the first Sommelon was held. Jess
Fernandes' house in Kepem is not far from Curchorem where the second sammelon
was held. And both these Libraries are well stocked with Konkani books in
Roman Script dating to the seventeenth century. And these venerable gentlemen
(also Brazinho Soares of Kalapur) have earlier displayed their collections at
various Konknni Parishads; they would have certainly obliged, had a simple
request been made.
