PANAJI: PETA India, a Mumbai-based group that fights against cruelty to
animals, has called upon Goans to turn vegetarian and leave fish off their
plates.
PETA’s latest findings have revealed that the fish we consume is infested with
high mercury content and also that by the year 2048, there will be no fish left
in the oceans owing to overfishing.
Speaking to the press on Thursday, Mr NikunjSharma of PETA stated that there is
a need to place reforms in the fishing industry and also now consumption of
fish will lead to health problems.
“A research by various NGOs in the coastal areas of Mumbai and Kolkata showed
high level of mercury content in fish. The admissible level is 1 PPM but it was
more than 1.78 PPM. This can result in damage to the nervous system and can
also cause skin diseases among humans,” he stated.
PETA conducted an in-depth investigative report where they surveyed all the
coastal states of the country, including Goa.
When asked about the Goa scenario, he said, “Goa’s fishing turnover is 1 lakh
tonne a year. This amount is quite huge for a state like Goa which has a small
coast compared to other coastal states. Here the problem is of over-fishing and
also fishing during the banned period.”
He requested the State Fisheries Department to conduct a study to check the
mercury content in the fish.
He pointed out that it is very important to follow the banned period of 45 days
as it is the breeding time for fish and thus it will help in replenishing the
fish population in the deep sea.
He also warned that if we continue with fishing at this pace then there will be
no fish left to consume by the year 2048. It is believed that in the year
2004-05, India produced 64 lakh tonne of fish and out of which 80 per cent was
exported.
Mr Sharma also highlighted poaching of sharks and dolphins which are protected
under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
“During our investigation we found out that in many places these wild species
are killed. For example at government owned port in Kochi, Kerala we witnessed
such killing of dolphins and sharks and sold for as little as Rs 2000,” he
lamented.
Commenting further on fishing he opined that various activities like ‘sport’
fishing (angling), commercial fishing and fish farming is not in a good taste.
“We are ok if someone does fishing for self consumption. But, that is not
happening in any part of the country. Also angling is a very inhuman activity
as sometimes it is done only for the entertainment and it is not even consumed.
The fish in this case dies due to stress,” he informed.
Elaborating on the future course of action he mentioned that they are planning
to meet the state machineries and also are writing to the MoEF (Ministry of
Environment and Forest). They are also
planning to write to the Prime Minister about this issue.
