Shri. Tomazinho Cardozo, President of Tiatr Academy of Goa addressing the press conference in TAG’s Conference Hall stated that TAG is making all out efforts to develop tiatr in all respects. The occasion of the ‘Tiatr Day’ to be celebrated on 17th April 2010 at 10:00 am in TAG’s Conference Hall will be used to launch numerous activities on the field of Goan Tiatr.

“When the curtains rise… a story of Goa’s Tiatr” written by Dr. Rafael Fernandes and published by Tiatr Academy of Goa will be released on the occasion. A directory of Tiatr Artistes compiled by Tiatr Academy of Goa will also be released.

Dr. Rafael Fernandes dwelt in detail about the content of the book and the difficulties he faced during his six years research. Tomazinho Cardozo stated that the book will be first of its kind because it is a research work and provides authentic information.

Mr. Cardozo also informed the press about the schemes and activities of TAG which will be implemented with the aim of developing Goan Tiatr in all aspects. The details of the schemes are as under:-

(1) Documentation of the history of Tiatr
Documentation can be done in the following ways:

(a) Documentation of experiences of the old living artistes will be done by interviewing old artistes of Tiatr which includes writers, directors, actors, singers, musicians, persons involved in stage setting, light effects, background music, etc. etc. on DVDs. (b) By publishing books on history, critical appreciation and on any other topics related to Tiatr, its song and music.

(2) Promotion of Tiatr through educational institutions
In order to make the students in the schools and colleges aware of the Goan traditional Tiatr – its history and its importance in the Goan society, TAG in collaboration with other individuals / institutions will organize seminars, workshops, lectures, etc. for the students of educational institutions.

(3) Raising the Standard of Tiatr
Improvement of the standard of Tiatr in all respects is the need of the hour. Therefore TAG will organize workshops/seminars, etc on various aspects of Tiatr such as Script writing, Acting, Direction, Light Effects, Stage Setting, Back Ground music, etc. by inviting knowledgeable resource persons in theatre art from other languages.

(4) Preservation of Tiatr literature
Tiatr literature needs to be preserved for posterity. This will be done by publishing books of scripts of Tiatrs, One Act Plays and Lyrics of songs, with or without music scores, etc.

(5) Promotion of Tiatr music
TAG has observed that the number of musicians playing blowing instruments such as Trumpet and Saxphone is decreasing day by day. Hence TAG has formulated a scheme to encourage youth and others to learn to play blowing instruments particularly Trumpet and Saxphone by providing them with financial assistance.

(6) Promotion of Award Winning Tiatr
Kala Academy, Goa organizes Tiatr Festivals every year in Panjim only. But the producers and directors of award winning tiatrs have no opportunity to stage these award winning tiatrs in other parts of Goa. Therefore TAG will organize a festival of award winning tiatrs in other parts of Goa.

(7) Remembering Tiatr artistes of yester years
Tiatr stage produced great tiatr personalities in the past. These pioneers of tiatr are no more with us. Their contribution to the Goan tiatr is immense. Unfortunately today’s younger generation do not know anything about them.

In order to make our younger generation aware of their contribution and sacrifices TAG has introduced schemes as follows: (i) To commemorate their jubilee birth anniversaries i.e. 75th, 100th, 125th, etc birth anniversaries by organizing special functions and appropriate programmes. (ii) To give financial support to troupes/ institutions/ individuals for producing special programmes on the lives of particular artistes or a programme of the tiatrs staged and songs rendered by those artistes in the past.

(8) Financial assistance to troupes going to Bombay/Poona
Goan Tiatr was born in Bombay. There was a time when the Tiatr culture was more prominent in Bombay than in Goa. Dramatic troupes from Bombay used to come to Goa to stage their tiatrs. In the recent years the scenario has completely changed. Dramatic troupes from Goa go to Bombay and stage their shows in Bombay and Poona. Many a time staging tiatrs in Bombay/Poona by Goan dramatic troupes is not a financially viable proposition. Therefore TAG has introduced a scheme to give financial support to the tune of Rs. 25,000/ - to any dramatic troupe going to Bombay/Poona to stage tiatrs there provided that at least five shows of the same tiatr are staged during that trip.

(9) Encouragement to production of Tiatr in villages
TAG is of the opinion that the hidden singing and acting talents among the youths in the villages must be explored and that encouragement should be given to develop such talents in the villages. In view of this, TAG has formulated a scheme to promote tiatr activities in the villages among the youth and old by giving them the required financial and technical support.

(10) Preservation of Tiatr material
There is a lot of Tiatr material in the form of manuscripts, hand written lyrics, printed books, old HMV records, CDs and DVDs etc, scattered here and there with government authorities as well as with private individuals. Therefore TAG will collect this material if possible and preserve it for posterity by establishing a Museum / library of TAG.

(11) Insurance of Tiatr artistes
TAG felt that many a time tiatr artistes face a lot of financial problems in case of accidents. In view of this TAG has formulated a scheme to insure all artistes of the Tiatr stage under Group Insurance Cover.

(12) Awards
Awards play an important role in the lives of artistes. Those on the stage, if awarded, get encouragement to perform better in future and those who are no more active on the stage feel proud because their contribution to the Tiatr stage is recognized. Therefore TAG has instituted the following awards: (a) To give awards in all departments of Tiatr such as acting, direction, singing, script writing, stage setting, light effects, back ground music, etc by organizing a Tiatr festival of popular/commercial tiatrs every year. (b) To give awards to audio albums of Konkani songs i.e. for the best singers (male & female), for the best lyricist, for the best musician and for the best Audio album every year.
(c) Life time achievement awards to tiatr artistes of yester years.

(13) Miscellaneous activities
There are numerous cultural institutions as well as individuals in Goa who organize various tiatr related activities in their respective villages/towns. These activities include competitions, talks, seminars, etc. They contribute in keeping the tiatr culture alive. TAG has formulated a scheme to support institutions and individuals to carry on such activities.

(14) Orientation courses in Dramatics
TAG has observed that there are numerous artistes who would like to undergo regular training in various aspects of dramatics. TAG has formulated the scheme called ‘Regular Orientation in Dramatics’. It will commence shortly.

(15) Production of Children’s Tiatrs by Schools/Colleges/Individuals
A lot of enthusiasm is shown by the students of schools and colleges and other students to involve themselves in the tiatr activities. There are also individuals who would like to produce Tiatrs involving children. This is a good sign for the development of tiatr. In view of this, the scheme called ‘Production of Children’s Tiatrs is formulated by TAG.

(16) Production of Model Tiatrs
TAG has observed that the format of Tiatr is not maintained in the tiatrs staged in recent years. Therefore, TAG will produce one ‘Model’ tiatr every year which will project the traditional format of tiatr.

(17) Production of Musical Programme or Tiatr on Patriotism/National Integration/ Communal Harmony TAG has observed that tiatr artistes do not normally produce Tiatrs as well as Audio and Video CDs on patriotism/ national integration/communal harmony. Therefore, the scheme called ‘Production of Musical Programme or Tiatr on Patriotism/National Integration/ Communal Harmony’ is formulated.

(18) Promotion of Duets/Duos/Trios/Quartets
It is observed that singing of duets/duos/trios/quartets etc. has been on the decline day by day. It is also observed that the correct concept of duets/duos/trios/quartets as done traditionally by the tiatr stage artistes of yesteryears is not followed. Therefore, this scheme is formulated in order to preserve the traditional concept of duets/duos/trios/quartets etc.

(19) Scheme to Promote Konkani Songs with Choreography
The songs in other languages have shown tremendous improvement as far as attracting the audience is concerned. Good music, good lyrics, good singing and good showmanship have helped the song to reach at a higher level. In the modern times, choreography with meaningful dancing has made songs in other languages very popular. Therefore, the scheme to promote Konkani songs with choreography has been formulated so that Konkani ‘Kantar’ is presented with choreography and dancing.

(20) TAG’s other activities.

Besides the above schemes, TAG’s other programmes include: -
(a) Yearly Festival of Popular Tiatrs.
(b) Celebrations of Birth days of founders of Tiatrs namely Lucazinho Ribeiro – the Creator of Tiatr, Joao Agostinho Fernandes – Father of Tiatr and Regina Fernandes – the first woman on tiatr stage.
