Ice-cream 'Gadbad' (and a bit of my childhood) Ice-cream always been my favorite. Falooda with Ice-cream, fruit salad with ice-cream, banana split etc.
In 1980’s, there came something like Ice-cream ‘gadbad.’ And the best place for it was at cream centre, Panjim (near Market). ‘Gadbad’ is served in a narrow but long glass with T-Sppon which was even longer than the glass. The glass was jammed packed with ice-cream and plenty of crunchy or crispy items like dry fruits such as cashew nuts etc. On top, it was garnished with tooti-frutti, a cherry and a triangular crispy crisp was pierced in it And that become my favorite too And after a long time, when I saw the ‘gadbad’ under Ice-cream menu at Navtara, I immediately ordered one. But it was nothing like the one I had before. It had no crispy items except some cashew nuts. It had some Pineapple dices (which I think is not a part of Gadbad I use to) and disintegrated pieces of cherries. Did I like it? - No, not this one. Gadbad http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk25/4571194785/ When we come out of Navtara, there we saw ‘Cream Centre’ to our left across the road. At school, my favourite was ice-gola (Icecrutt or Ice fruit) costing just 5 paise and I could not even afford it. There was a time, I even chewed discarded dry sticks from the ground because they taste sweet/flavoured. I guess I was below 10. I even remember trading 10 Cashew nuts (Whole nuts) for 1 ‘ice-crot’. Cashew nut we collected from nearby hillock. Not that we were poor but my mother was very strict particularly when it come to money and discipline. My father was a ‘tarvoti’ (Seaman). We were rich in our neighbourhood. eg. We had Radio, others din't have one. Things now a days are different. While still at school, a school bags could contain all sort of things, like big money, cigarettes, mobile, blue film CDs, drugs, condoms etc etc I wish everybody’s mothers were as strict as mine.
