Earlier this month Jason Keith Fernandes was invited by the EU Presidency in India to speak to the European Ambassadors assembled in Goa for the inauguration of the EU Film Festival, on 'The European Presence in Goa'. In this presentation, Jason hopes to present the argument delivered to this earlier limited audience, to a wider Goan public. Rather than tow the usual line of speaking of vestigial European presences, Jason has sought to breakdown the terms European, Presence and Goa. In this presentation, that draws from a rich trove of art, architectural and corporeal presences, he suggests that presence cannot be understood to be merely a one-way street from Europe to Goa. Furthermore, the terms Europe and Goa themselves can be rearticulated to open up a wider and more meaningful route through which we can lay the foundations for a democratic and contemporary dialogue between Goa and Europe.
