Goa may have 40 more engineering seats from the new academic year, director for
technical education Vivek Kamat said on Monday. "We have written to the All
India Council of Technical Education asking for an increase of 20 seats each in
civil and mechanical engineering. If the proposal is accepted, the seats will
see a rise from the new academic year," Kamat said.

Explaining why an increase in seats has been sought, he said, "Over 2,000
students are eligible for engineering seats in Goa each year after answering
the GCET. But Goa has only 740 seats on offer." Besides, Goa Engineering
College is the only institute to offer a degree in civil engineering in the
state, he added.

Kamat said that the number of applicants for GCET is increasing every year.
This year there were 200 more applicants than last year, he said. "The number
of students joining the science stream is increasing," he said, adding that
most take up science with the intention of joining some professional course.

Of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) to be set up in Goa, Kamat said,
"Ninety-nine per cent of the preparations to set up the NIT are complete and
the institute is likely to begin operating soon. The NIT's intake will be 90
seats and it will temporarily be based at the Goa Engineering College campus.
Computer science, electronics and communications and electronic and electrical
engineering are the three streams that will be offered."
