Canadian girl crowned Young Goans May Queen

Bahrain: Canadian national Yasmin Chahal, an English teacher at the Al Naseem 
International School scooped the Spectrum May Queen 2010 crown organized by 
Young Goans Club, Bahrain on May 27 at Delmon Hotel. 
 
Miss Chahal beat 17 other beauties from around the world at the impressive 
event held at the poolside of the hotel in Manama. Her dominance was so immense 
that she also bagged the ‘Best Hair-Do’ and ‘Best Smile’ awards. 



Ernestina Day, from Ghana, pursuing her career at the Bahrain Institute of 
Banking and Finance was the 1st Runner-up. Ms Day also claimed the ‘Max Effect’ 
award for ranking top in the first round. Rachel Dias, a Goan student at the 
Sacred Heart School was the second runner up. Ms Dias also bagged the ‘Ms. 
Articulate award’ for her eloquence in the ‘Brain & Wit’ round.
 
A capacity crowd of over 1000 people attended the mega event of the club to 
watch Indian, Bahraini, Ghanaian, Canadian, Moroccan, Pakistani and Filipino 
women aged between 16 and 28 vie for the coveted crown. 
 
The first round was in sporty/trendy wear with costumes sponsored by MAX. The 
second round was in formal wear. Top six contestants were shortlisted for the 
final round of Brain & Wit, where they had 30 seconds to introduce themselves 
and answer a question from the judges. Other than the winners Shrada Vyas 
(Indian), Zahra Zahid (Pakistani) and Senorita Fernandes (Indian) made it to 
the top 6.
 
The winners took away loads of prizes in cash, air-tickets, jewellery, 
electronic goods, cosmetics, gift hampers and vouchers for dinner/lunch at top 
class restaurants. Other participants were also given shopping vouchers.

The beauty pageant was choreographed by Fahad Al Dossary and assisted by 
Yousif. Former Vice President of the club Gerard Fernandes coordinated the 
pageant presentation. Master of ceremony Updes Swar specially flown in from Goa 
entertained the crowd with humorous and witty dialogue throughout the show. He 
was well supported by local based Goan compere G.R Crasto. 
 
Bahrain based band ‘Aryan Fame’ provided music during the evening and DJ Music 
& Lights arranged the background music and stage lighting. 
 
President of Young Goans Club Francis Correia in his speech expressed his 
appreciation to the sub-committee led by Alfred D’Souza for successfully 
organizing the event. 
 
YGC May Queen of 2009 Miss Amy Vaya crowned the new Queen. The panel of judges 
consisted of Archie De Mello, Alison Lillywhite, Beverly Viegas, Shafeeqa 
Fakier and Fabian Cutaran. 
 
Spectrum Group of Companies was the Platinum sponsors of the event. Gold 
Sponsor was Coca Cola, while HSBC Bahrain was the Silver sponsor. 
 
Other major sponsors were Al Rashid Group, Union Press, Media solution and 
African & Eastern. 
 
The event was also supported by Verminex, Universal Food Centre, Bahrain 
Financing Co, Papillion Restaurant, KLM/Air France, Gulf House Markets, Home
