Subject: [Goanet] Media sold out to Ministers and Businesses

I had written in response: Rajdeep Sardessai’s low stoop favouring his financers and advertisers. The so called FOURTH ESTATE especially electronic media has forgotten their MANDATE. Time has come that a FIFTH ESTATE is required to harness electronic media. Media is sacrificing their responsibilities at the altar of their business interests. Take for example SMS polls they conduct. SMS are sent only by a few. One person can send any number of votes. They do not cover a sizable population. The voters do not constitute representative sample. Poll results therefore can create a wrong impression in the minds of people who are not fully informed and who are unable to see through the lacunae in the poll and business interests of the TV channel. The Charge for SMS is also higher than normal. Mobile service provider makes money and shares it with TV channel. The government should ban this charge. In fact the SMS should be free to the sender. If at all the mobile service provider has to be paid, it should come from TV channel. This way more people can vote and the polls can be meaningful. Consumer forums should take this up.
