For more then a fortnight now, the state of Goa is abuzz with the suicidal death of a young girl Nadia Joelle Torrado, who is allegedly said to have had intimate relationship with high profile former Tourism minister of Goa Mickky Pacheco for some years now. The pointers of investigation in the abetment to suicide case which stands registered against unknown persons are slowly placing itself and the facts that are emerging from interrogation of various persons in the know how, is a sad saga of alleged sex, assault and deceit with knowledge of the family.

The minister and his team of think tanks, tried real hard to cover up the entire issue, by airlifting the victim to Bombay and admitting her into a hospital in Thana which is literally unknown to keep her away from media glare and then flying a clinically dead person to Chennai by chartering a flight to carry out liver transplant. But nothing could save the life of the 28 year old girl. In Nadia Joelle Torrado’s death’s, exposed the underbelly of the minister, who is allegedly known to be ill tempered, arrogant, violent and a women beater for whom women are just objects to be used, misused, abused and then discarded. He has admitted in public that, “I can have as many girls”. Ironically before he could make this statement he stood charged for bigamy in a case filed by his wife. That he has three kids from a woman whom he allegedly promised marriage is another example of his character.

This reminds me of an election campaign speech of advocate Radharao in support of then UGDP candidate Monte Cruz. This witty advocate cum politician had warned the electorate of Benaulim constituency not to vote for Mickky Pacheco, because Gracias had said, if he is elected to power, mother’s will have to hide their daughters from Mickky’s sight. He was spot on; ironically it has come true in an assembly constituency where Mickky had set his eyes on.

Coming back to his cover up plan, the minister’s team even put the estranged husband of the deceased under house arrest, but they overlooked or rather did not pay attention to the maid, who spilled all the beans to the police during her interrogation. Armed with this information, the police set out to put the pieces together by linking the roles of every individual into the death of the young girl.

The initial noises by the family members that the police were harassing them were pressure tactics to gain public sympathy and throw them off track and maybe even destroy evidence which has now come on record. The question here is why is the family trying save Mickky Pacheco, has he created fear psychosis in their minds that they feel that till the time he is at large, he will be a threat to them? Or has he extended his largesse to family that they have become so indebted to him that they cannot tell the truth?

The initial statement by the mother that her daughter mistook Ratol for toothpaste lacks credibility, because poison is not kept alongwith tooth pastes, cosmetics and even medicines.

Moreover, this is not the first time that the deceased attempted to committed suicide, few months’ back she tried to end her life in the Arabian Sea and was saved by the proprietor of a hotel in Colva.

The case stands transferred to Crime Branch for investigation, not that it lifts the confidence of the general public because cases against the same man like the criminal intimidation of a general manager of a casino is gathering dust. As a former Tourism minister, who had termed Goa as a rape capital of India after the alleged rape of a Russian girl by his political rival John Fernandes, Mickky had made sure that the crime branch not only cancelled the bail granted to John by approaching the High Court, but also saw to it that he was incarcerated.

But that was John, a budding politician (who displayed similar qualities like Mickky, but only prematurely) who gave the disgraced Benaulim MLA a run for his money during the last assembly elections. In the same breath, I would like to ask how different is Mickky Pacheco, he is a self confessed philanderer, who like John Fernandes went underground fearing arrest for his alleged involvement in abetment to commit suicide and culpable homicide, which attracts a decade of imprisonment if found guilty, similar to rape or attempt to rape. Besides he has loads of other criminal cases pending against him.

The investigation into the case has to be thorough so as to expose Mickky Pacheco’s deeds, so that it sends a message to other politicians that some day the long arm of the law will catch up with them. In furtherance, investigation into the finances of the Mickky Pacheco has also to be carried out simultaneously as he has spent big money to save the life of his family friend to the extent of paying lakhs and lakhs of rupees by way of hospitals bills, for liver transplant and even chartering a flight for the deceased to be flown from Bombay to Chennai. The government should get to the root source of his income generation.

It would also not be out of place to remind the readers that last year when Mickky was caught on CCTV gambling in a casino, he was clearly seen digging for bundles of money from his socks and underwear. Investigation have to be carried out to find his source of money to buy imported cars like the Hummer and also to find his purchasing power to buy land and also to engage top shot lawyers from Bombay and Delhi.

In recent times, this disgraced minister had started to think that he was invincible and above law. With his brash attitude, he thought he could rough shod everybody, be it his ministerial colleagues or the public at large. Even recently while demanding a judicial probe into the death of Nadia, he tried to throw chief minister and Home minister on the backfoot by demanding probe into Excise scam and involvement of minister’s son in drug trade and thereby dug his grave deeper.

In conclusion, former disgraced Tourism minister Mickky Pacheco tried to get Calvert Gonsalves producer of controversial audio CD, ‘Dogui Bodmas’ arrested three times in different cases and failed all the times, the question is will the fugitive Mickky Pacheco be as lucky? (ENDS)
