Dr. Martin Flossy lead Goa’s challenge at the National Dancesport
championship

The 4th National Dancesport Championship will be held in Delhi on 27th
June 2010. In all 11 States from the country will compete with each
other to win the National championship.
Goa will be represented at the National level by the Goa Dancesport
Association, an affiliate of the All India Dancesport Federation. A team
comprising of 06 couples including last year’s Gold Medalists Dr. Martin
and Flossy will lead the Goan challenge. In the year 2009 the Goa
Dancesport Association team were the runners up in their first ever
participation in the National Championship.
The team selection process was conducted by Goa Dancesport Association a
registered body from amongst its affiliated schools. A dance competition
was held among all the competitive members to select the team to
represent Goa.
The Goa Dancesport Association team has put in long hours of vigorous
practice for the last 3 months on a regular basis at their headquarters
in Vasco in preparation for this National event. Dancesport, it may be
noted is a competitive form of ballroom unlike social dancing which is
danced at social events like weddings and parties etc.
The team will be participating in two categories viz., Latin and
Standard dances, which are again subdivided into several categories. In
the Latin category have the Cha cha cha, Samba, Rumba, Jive, and
Pasodoble. In the Standard category you have; Waltz, Tango, Vienne
waltz, Foxtrot, and Quickstep. The team will take part in all.
Besides the above mentioned categories, National championship gold
medalists Dr. Martin and Flossy will this time vive for honours in
Standard 5 dance category.
The selected team consist of the athletes Dr Martin and Flossy, Jason
and Aishwarya, Bhavin and Nieta, Francis and Vivian, Shray and Dr Xiyan,
Jeethan and Dr Berthaline. Whilst Mr. Maxie Correia and Richard Vaz will
accompany the team as the Managers.
It is pertinent to note that Dance Illusions set up 4 years a go in
Vasco is the only Dance School in Goa exclusively promoting only
Dancesport with a qualified Ballroom Dance Instructor.
The popularity of Dance Illusions has spread far and wide and taken the
dance enthusiasts by storm raising the bar of Ballroom dancers to an all
time high. Within a matter of 4 years Dance Illusions have set up 2 more
Centres at Panjim and Margao besides Vasco.
With their insatiable passion for dancing and inspiring others to do so
Dr. Martin & Flossy with their trained team has transformed Ballroom
dancing into a passionate sport for the young and the old cutting across
age barriers. For many after having joined Dance Illusions in Vasco,
Margao or Panjim, dancing is no longer an illusion but a reality.
Dr. Xiyan a member of the team speaking to this writer said “This is the
first time I am participating in an event like this at the National
level and I am very excited about it. Three months of regular training
has instilled a sense of confidence in me and as a team we surely hope
to give it our best shot and bring honour to Goa. Its thanks to Dr.
Martin and Flossy with whose support, encouragement and training I am
looking forward to do my best.”
Bhavin Thakker a second time participant at the National Championship
event had this to say “ We have very good team and we are hoping for the
best. Our confidence level is much higher this time than last years.
Last year we were new to the event and did not know what to expect, now
we have prepared ourselves and raised our bar much higher. We expect
tough competition from Mumbai and Delhi, but we are prepared for that
and hope to make Goa proud.”
Though most the team members are students of Dance Illusions, they are
however professionals in their own diverse fields. And amongst the
present team we have Doctors, Teachers, Engineers, Executives and school
students too. The winners at this years’ National Dancesport
Championship will represent India at the Asian Games in Dancesport at
China in November 2010 where this Dancesport event is making its maiden
appearance. Will Dr. Martin & Flossy soon lead India all the way to
China? Only time will tell….and time is not too far off. The results of
this National Dancesport championship will be declared by midnight on
27th June 2010 itself. Till then here’s wishing the Goan Dancesport team
