Fred,
I read this article in the print version of Time magazine, before reading it online. There are lots of Goans in Edison, NJ but not sure of any Goanetters. Many Goans, mostly alumni of Pharmacy College, moved to New Jersey in the 70s. I must say that this article was a bit offensive in nature, to the Indian community. Indians in general, are peaceful and law abiding --more so in the US! It is not that the Gujarati community moving into Edison has ruined it in anyway! I have witnessed the transformation of Edison and New Jersey in general, over the past 15 years or so. As has been the case in many of the US neighbourhoods previously dominated by a particular ethnic population -- mostly European, Edison has been a popular place for Indians to move into! Edison is a township in Central New Jersey and has easy access to New York City by train. The housing is cheaper than New York City. With the influx of Indians, grocery stores and services that cater to Indians have flourished too. Edison has a sizeable Chinese population too. With the 2010 census in progress in the US, the movement of communities from their previous strongholds to newer areas, is being highlighted. Almost all major cities in the US, have their Italian, Chinese, Irish sections. The Chinese sections might have grown, but the Italians have moved out and Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis have moved in, to take their place. A lot of Russians and East Europeans have moved in too. So, the demographic picture has changed quite appreciably. A lot of Hispanics -- Spanish people of South America, both legal and illegal, have moved into the US and it said that by 2040 or even earlier, they will become the majority population! This will push the White majority into 2nd place. Of course, the influx of these hardworking people is a question of supply and demand. They have moved in to fill the void. They are taking up jobs that most whites and blacks in the US, do not want to do! I hope Joel Stein understands and accepts that the US and the world in general, is changing! US is a country of immigrants and Indians have a long way to go in becoming the largest group!
