Goa opens up competition
Intl. Film Festival of India adds acting awards
By NAMAN RAMACHANDRAN
LONDON -- The Intl. Film Festival of India in Goa has opened up its
competition section to films from all parts of the world. Until now,
entries were restricted to films from Asia, Latin America and Africa.
The competition was open to all until 1988 when it was scrapped after
complaints about the quality of entries. It was restarted in 1995.
The fest is also introducing best actor and actress categories, India's
minister for information and broadcasting Ambika Soni announced
Saturday. The changes follow recommendations made by an expert committee
that the minister formed last year to look at ways to improve the
festival. Soni also formed a committee to look into improving the Indian
national film awards. On their suggestion, there will now be a two-tier
jury system with five regional juries shortlisting films for a national
jury to consider.
Total prize money will nearly treble to $435,000 from the existing $150,000.
The 41st edition of the fest runs Nov. 22-Dec. 2.
