The overall conduct of Benaulim MLA Mr. Mickky Pacheco over the last decade leaves much to be desired. A legislator being a law maker should be the last person to mock the rule of law. His recent conduct has come under the scanner of the Sessions Court, High Court and later the Supreme Court of India while rejecting his anticipatory bail applications. He absconded for a month while the police chose to refrain from making any genuine efforts to nab him.
When the temples of justice closed the doors on him the former Tourism Minister’s only option was to surrender. Instead of giving himself up before the Crime Branch or the Judicial Magistrate First Class as was required, he chose to present himself before the Sessions Court and seek interim bail in spite of the Supreme Court having ruled that his custodial interrogation was necessary. On being sent to judicial custody Mickky managed the luxury of checking himself into the ICU at Margao’s Hospicio hospital probably anticipating that he would have had to face head-on his political adversary Mr. John Fernandes who is currently in the judicial lockup he was being sent to. As a law maker Mickky Pacheco should realise that he cannot take the long arm of the law for a ride. He is accused of a very serious crime. The Court of law is the only place where he should prove his innocence. Hiring his supporters to assemble outside the court in solidarity serves no purpose as this in fact amounts to contempt of Court and interference with the administration of justice. Every good Judge goes by the merits of the case and cannot be influenced or manipulated by other considerations. And good judges we have many.
