Their latest "bold" move has been to take into custody the unfortunate Sonia Torrado, who now not only has to contend with the loss of her child and the circumstances of her death, but must also bear the continuous and sustained police pressure on her and her family. While it is true that there is a law which must rule, there is also a "spirit" that the authorities must endeavour to apply when administering the law. Sonia Torrado is certainly no hardened criminal. She is not an alleged drug dealer who is putting the fate of an entire generation of young Goans into jeopardy. She is just an unfortunate human being and sorrowing mother who will forever have to live with the circumstances of her child's death. Sonia Torrado may have made some mistakes and wrong choices which alas, have had very severe repercussions. But which of us has not erred and later breathed a sigh of relief that we got off lightly? It is a tragedy that the uniform of the Goa police is fast turning into a symbol of shame. The ones who sold drugs seized by the police from drug dealers are alleged to be men in uniform. And the police very efficiently and conveniently permitted them to be released on bail. Destruction and tampering of evidence was apparently of no concern to the Crime branch in this case. Helpless women it seems are easy and attractive targets for our brave police. We would much rather see them in action with the drug mafia and the real criminals who walk the soil of Goa scot free.
