As if the spurt in thefts and house breaking in Goa was just seasonal, the Home Minister, Ravi Naik, has cautioned Goans to lock their houses properly if they plan to travel out during the ensuing Ganesh holidays. He has also advised them to carry along with them their valuables if possible. How can you expect people to travel in comfort and ease while also having to cart around their valuables?
Surprisingly, the Home Minister has not advised the Aam Aadmi to leave their valuables in the safe custody of the nearest police station or police outpost. With white ants known to eat confiscated drugs stored at the police headquarters, the police authorities may be apprehensive that gold and other valuables may be swallowed by bigger vultures. So have the police abdicated their duty of patrolling our streets and maintaining law and order? May be the armed forces should be called in to make our streets safe. Temples, churches and mosques have already been told to fend for themselves by having their own security. For Goans who once slept with their doors and windows open, the day may not be far when every household will need to be safeguarded by a private security guard.
