Rule of Reservations
A niz Goemkar is a goemkar first and then comes his religion and since the
literacy rate among niz goemkars almost touching 100 percent, caste system is
dead in Goa but unfortunately the reservations in the name of Caste forces us
to believe in Caste. With these reservations in the name of ST/SC/OBC not
forgetting the reservation for the sons, daughters, grandchildren of so called
freedom fighters, we the middle class men is always at the receiving end. My
very good friend who is presently working for a Restaurant to earn his
livelihood missed a Medical seat by a percent in the year 1991 but students
from the so called special category who have not even scored half of my friends
overall percentage still studying and struggling to complete their
Medicine degree course . Also some students who were found copying in the
Higher Secondary Exams at Canacona in the same year are practicing doctors. The
difference between my friend and the people
mentioned above are, my friend was born in a poor, non influential family
whereas some were lucky to be the members of special Category and some were
lucky to have rich parents so that a medical seat can be bought for them.
Now comes the Municipal Council elections. Again the news is, some seats will
be reserved for women and some will be reserved for SC/ST/OBC.Why there should
be reservations with regard to the elections? Nobody is stopping the SC/ST/OBC
or women in contesting elections; they are free to contest from wherever they
want. There is absolutely no need to reserve places and that too playing a
trick. If the government is so keen is reservations, why not reserve the Chief
Minister’s post to the Special category in the next assembly elections or why
not reserve the chairperson’s post in half of the Goa ’s municipal councils to
special category?
We are forced to believe in Caste system in Goa and how the same can be
finished when the same has been encouraged by our own government. It will be a
fun to watch the happenings in my own village, the so called land of freedom
fighters with regard to the forthcoming Municipal Council Elections.
