Goan Saint Update:

This message for publication from retired Archbishop of Calcutta, Henry
D'Souza,
to the Joseph Naik Vaz Institute in support of our signature campaign and
Petition to get Blessed Vaz canonized for his 300th Death Anniversary in 2011
has just been received:

"It is a matter of great regret that the canonization of Blessed Joseph Vaz is
still delayed. He has been a victim of colonial times. However devotion to
Bd.Joseph Vaz is widespread, both in Sri Lanka and in India. His deep humility
in refusing to accept the episcopate and his total commitment to Christ and his
Church are all too evident. The fruits of his labours are also very visible,
especially in the Island of Sri Lanka. The injustice done to his cause has been
amply demonstrated and also documented.
I have kept him as a model for imitation, and his image has been above my
writing desk for several decades. I feel very sad that there has to be a
signature campaign in order to get his dues. The Holy Father and other Church
dignitaries have time and again apologized for the Church’s failings in
history.
They were part of other perspectives, on which it is unfair to pass judgment
today with our present awareness of human values.
It would have been gracious to accept the historical reality and to give the
honour due to Blessed Joseph Vaz. God must have a reason for the delay. I pray
that the desires and prayers of the devotees of Blessed Joseph Vaz will be
answered during this centenary year. "

Please visit our website josephnaikvaz.org to add your signature. Better
still,
please print out the Petition and Signature Sheet to get 10 signatures from
your
friends who may not have internet. We have devotees collecting signatures on
the printed Signature Sheets in Sri Lanka and Mangalore as well as in Goa, the
U.S., and wherever there are Indian and Sri Lankan immigrants. Blessed Joseph
Vaz left 75,000 Catholics in Sri Lanka at his death, working under persecution,
and walking barefoot all over the 65,000 sq. km. of the island of Sri Lanka,
hiding in the jungles by day and ministering to them by night. We are hopeful,
perhaps unreasonably so, that we will have 75,000 signatures to send to the
Pope
by the end of the year. Your help could make all the difference.
With thousands of Causes in Rome, we need to speak up and be heard!

Dear Editor

Please print this important news for overseas Goanet readers

MUMBAI: In less than four years since the government gave Persons of
Indian Origin (PIOs) a second chance to reconnect with the country of
their forefathers, more than half a million foreign nationals have
acquired the coveted of (OCI).

Popularly known as ' citizenship', was first mooted in December 2005 to
woo the rich and influential Indian diaspora from across the world.
Recently, the scheme was in news when Nobel laureate V S Naipaul, whose
ancestors belonged to UP's Gorakhpur, was given a hard time by overzealous
babus in when he applied for the card. Naipaul was asked to provide
documents to prove that his ancestors indeed lived in India.

The Naipaul case apart, figures sourced by suggest that the scheme has
been a success especially among PIOs living in the First World. By the end
of March 2010, the government issued 5,73,324 dual citizenships in 91
countries.

Nearly half of these were American citizens followed by British,
Canadians and Australians. A common factor was at least one of their
ancestors had been an Indian.

The primary benefit of having an OCI status is that the holder gets a
lifelong visa to visit India and stay as long as he wants. Second, unlike
other foreign visitors, he does not need to register with local police on
arrival.

But, it's also a misnomer to assume that OCI grants any real
"citizenship". It does not give the a right to vote or contest elections
in India. He also cannot hold constitutional posts or buy agricultural
land in the country.

?
It was a Sports Stadium.
?
Eight Children were standing on the track to participate in a running event.
?
* Ready! * Steady! * Bang !!!
?
With the sound of Toy pistol, all eight girls started running.
?
Hardly had they covered ten to fifteen steps, when one of the smaller girls
slipped and fell down, Due to bruises and pain she started crying.
?
When the other seven girls heard the little girl cry they stopped running,
stood

for a while and turned back. Seeing the girl on the track they all ran to help.
?
One among them bent down, picked her up and kissed her gently and enquired as
to

how she was. They then lifted the fallen girl pacifying her.
?
Two of them held her firmly while all seven joined hands together and walked
together towards the winning post........
?
There was pin drop silence at the spectator's stand. Officials were shocked.
?
Slow claps multiplied to thousands as the spectators stood up in appreciation.
?
Many eyes were filled with tears and perhaps even God's, YES, this happened in
Hyderabad [INDIA ] recently!
?
The sport was conducted by National Institute of Mental Health. All these
special girls had come to participate in this event

They were spastic children. Yes, they were Mentally Challenged.

Hi Michael, Before someone else points it out... (a matter of detail,
but perhaps a relevant one):

Goanet is primarily a mailing list, not a website. It does have a
website, at www.goanet.org, but its main activity takes place via
email.

There have been other "internet sites", and ones which have played a
useful role too.

Going back to 1994 (though I personally discovered this only around
six months or later after it was first started), together with Goanet
(also called Goa-Net and GoaNet at different points of time) there
were interesting cyberventures too.

By some coincidence, around the same time that young Herman was
setting up Goanet in the North Eastern University (remember
neu.lyx.dac....?) Marlon Menezes set up GoaWeb (that later grew into
Goacom) while his Mount Abu schoolmate (I think) Uly Menezes set up
Goa-World, working out of the Gulf and still going strong.

These three ventures came out within months of each other, if I recall right.

Help me to remember a whole lot of other volunteers who played part of
this project along the way: Eddie Fernandes, Marlon Menezes, Sunila
Muzawar, Viviana Lobo, Christina Pinto (of CyberMatrimonials), Vishwas
Chavan (of NIO, the earliest news-contributor from Goa), Joel D'Souza
of Assagao (who was the news mainstay for long) and many names whom I
am obviously forgetting but not intentionally.

As someone pointed out earlier today, we did team up with Goacom.com
in the past, and apart from having the list hosted on their servers
for awhile, we also shared news and informative postings mutually for
some time.

I recall our many Goanetters' meetings (usually in December). Missed
the first one at the Mandovi's, and another in 2007 when out of Goa,
but recall the ones at the Fort Aguada (when Tomazinho told us of the
3000 cases of malaria in his constituency), International Centre (once
even Ashank Desai, the CEO of Mastek, came along), at the Institute
Menezes Braganza, QuaterDeck (if I recall right), Kala Academy canteen
(before the no-informal meetings rule got tightened), and Foodland at
Miramar (for a meeting which even Bosco believes JoeGoaUK showed up!)

As I've acknowledged earlier, I learnt of Goanet via a
letter-to-the-editor Tim D'Mello wrote to the Herald. Eddie tried to
sell the idea of a not-for-profit mailing list to local newspapers,
but all freaked out just thinking of the no-money-changes-hand idea!

Then colleagues at the Herald International Review (a shortlived but
interesting tabloid), comprising Goldwyn Figueira, Agnelo Rodrigues
and Susan Fernandes, were quick to however buy into the idea and
started sharing news too, soon.

Time does fly. Despite being a contrarian, I will agree for once with
the dominant view that it was very nice being part of this
roller-coaster ride! FN

Incredible. In less than two weeks, 700 hundred signatures from Goans around
the
globe. You have clearly stated you want a Goan Saint now. You have waited long
enough - 300 years. But we need more signatures to be presented to the Pope.

[Btw, the Padre Agnelo cause is with the Pilar Society and they are handling
his
cause with their resources. The Blessed Vaz cause for sainthood has no
Religious
order helping out and it is left to lay people to promote the cause, that is
why
your help is essential].

Thanks to all who have signed the petition so far. But continue to forward to
family/friends and try and get 10 signatures each. Don't miss this opportunity
to help a Goan saint achieve his rightful honour after 300 long years. If
Blessed Vaz is canonized a saint it will be due to people like you who helped
his cause.

Please sign your First AND Last name to the petition.

The 300th anniversary of the death of Blessed Joseph Vaz (born Goa, India) is
fast approaching on January 16, 2011. Our Joseph Naik Vaz Institute has worked
to publicize his life and Cause since 1980, when we incorporated in California
as a 501(c)(3) in the State of California. We ask for your support of our new
Petition to the Pope, His Holiness Benedict XVI, asking that Blessed Joseph Vaz
be canonized for the 300th anniversary of his death.

300 years is a long wait for a Catholic Saint and Blessed Vaz could be on the
verge of being canonized with your support. Please sign the petition and
forward
to your family and friends to sign. All welcome to sign (i.e. you do not have
to
be Catholic).

Hi Seb, Sure there will (and it will be a pleasure to meet you!)

Let me try a rough listing. Please don't fault me if I forget anyone,
as is likely! Among the Goanetters you could expect there are: Selma
of course, columnist Valmiki Faleiro, critic and translator Augusto
Pinto, former legislator and Goaologist Radharao Gracias, campaigner
Godfrey JI Gonsalves, literary critic Dan Driscoll, novelist and
architectural historian Amita Kanekar, retired principal Tony de Sa
[now working on a book on Goans in Africa], comunidade researcher and
Goa book collector Leroy Veloso, author of six books Fr. Nascimento
['Follow Me'] Mendonca, Delhi-based Fatima Pais, Diana and Edwin Pinto
(campaigners and also publishers of an interesting and now
out-of-print book on restaurants of Goa), artist and museum curator
Victor Hugo-Gomes (if he gets back from Mumbai on time!) and I'm sure
I've missed out others.

Miguel Braganza is conducting a training (on plants) at another venue,
though he also might not be too happy if I call him a Goanetter :-)

The guy with the longest, greyest moustache will probably be me. FN

PS: Not included names of those Goanetters whom I've not received a
confirmation from...

WORLD GOA DAY DAY BONDERAM FESTIVAL 2010

A decade has elapsed since the inception of the movement for the
solidarity of world goans initiated in the year 2000 by Mr. Rene
Barreto, the coordinator of goans world over.

The response by goans to the call by Rene to show their love for their
mother tongue, Konkani, which was accepted by the government of India as
a state language, by celebrating August 20 as World Goa Day each year,
was overwhelming and spontaneous. Goan associations throughout the world
wasted no time in showing their interest in this worthy and challenging
objective.

Since then Goa Day has been celebrated in every nook and corner in all
the continents where goans are located and the movement continues to
gallop at a rapid pace and in the ensuing years promises to envelop many
of the unchartered areas. This year Rene requested that the ladainha be
included as the main theme to commemorate the completion of a glorious
decade of solidarity between goans everywhere. The Divar Association of
Toronto has celebrated this day each year in August together with the
Bonderam Festival. This year being the decade year they decided to
celebrate in a grand way at the Sapphire Banquet and Conference Centre,
959, Derry Road, Mississauga on 22 August. This function proved to be a
tremendous success in every way and was attended by a huge gathering of
divarkars including a dozen who were visiting Toronto. As usual many of
our well wishers and friends also joined us and enthusiastically lent
their most welcome support. The demand for invites was beyond
expectation but because of limited capacity of the hall we were
constrained to refuse the late comers. Many of the the attendees
expressed their feelings to me and I quote " the food was good, the
music was good, the lighting was good, the venue was good, the guests
were good and the show was organized well".

The program began with the singing of the Litany in latin, followed by
the Salve Rainha in portuguese in honor of Our Lady of Fatima who paid a
special visit to celebrate the occasion, thanks to Mr. Anthony Pereira.
Then we sang the oracao of St. Francis Xavier in konkani for the patron
saint of Goa. Then, after a brief speech by the president welcoming the
attendees, the merrymaking began with Richard Coutinho of DJ-Symphony
providing excellent music to suit the occasion and exhibiting a dazzling
combination of multi-colored lights. The attendees were thrilled and
danced their heart out until the announcement of dinner. The sumptuous
meal consisted of yellow pilaf, butter chicken curry, sorpotel, goa
style prawn curry, spinach and paneer, dal makhani, green salad, raita
and nans. Gulab jamuns were served for dessert. We express our thanks to
Clarina Coutinho who was largely responsible for the preparation of
sorpotel and the prawn curry which gave a goan flavor to the meal.

The parade of the sixteen flags of the vaddos (wards) of the island of
Divar carried by prominent divarkars began soon after. The grand march
moved around the hall to the accompaniment of march, polka and goan
masala music. After circling around four times the flag bearers gathered
in the centre of the hall for photographs. At this juncture several of
the attendees in the hall could not restrain themselves any longer and
joined in the parade. As the crescendo of music accelerated the
spectacle of dancing and merrymaking crossed new boundaries and was a
treat to watch.

During the course of the evening the song composed by Mr. Basilio Magno
?proud to be a goan? was played and at popular request of the guests,
mandos and dulpods were sung by the them during the dinner.

It was indeed a very successful and enjoyable evening and all had a very
good time. A special word of thanks to our secretary Juliet Diamante
(nee Pinto) for her tremendous effort in the printing of the invites and
controlling the arrival and reception of the guests. I must also express
my appreciation to Suzanne DeSa for her very much appreciated assistance
in ensuring the attendance of over 30 of her friends. Last but not the
least, I cannot adequately express my thanks for the performance of my
son Richard who excelled beyond expectations and steered the function so
very well with the assistance of Max Pinto.

At the conclusion of the function the president and his wife thanked the
attendees for their participation and fond farewells were exchanged with
the promise to meet again next year.
