Mapusa has been and is still the hub market of Bardez. Its name evolved from
the Konkani words “maap” meaning volume of measure and “sa” meaning to fill.
During Portuguese rule, the name of the town was written as ‘Mapuça’ (please
note the C Cedilla); post liberation people wrote and still write it as
‘Mapuca’; it’s also written as ‘Mapusa’, and rarely people write it as
‘Mhapsa’ or ‘Maapsa’.
