Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am shocked to learn of the untimely death of Dr. Cornel D’Costa of cardiac arrest yesterday.

Dr. Cornel was very knowledgeable. He was a valuable contributor to Goanet. He was one of my admirers who appreciated my articles. We never met but we kept in touch with each other through email, especially after I posted my articles on Goanet. The last time we exchanged emails was in connection with my article “Milagrincho Khuris – Vatt” (Miraculous Cross – The Way) in January 2010.

He thanked me for an interesting account I provided in the article but posed several questions on the caste system in Goa and asked me why I chose not to refer, even if briefly, to the abomination of caste that has survived for the best part of half a millennium alongside the quixotic Catholicism among Catholic Goans.

He said it was still much of an issue at the time of marriage and of course, marriage adverts in papers like the Herald highlighted this consistently. He further said: “Your third paragraph below hints at what was supposed to change in the transition from Hindu to Catholic but honestly, unless we attack this caste nonsense much harder, it will just continue to incubate!”

He promised to send me what appeared of his article in the Contact Catholic Magazine, London but both of us forgot about it. He told me he hoped to write more in the international Catholic media and said: “I very much hope you will do so, too, especially as you are such a fine and perceptive writer”. Dr. Cornel was a gentleman.

We offer our deepest condolences to his family and pray to God to grant him eternal peace.
