Obituary
Dr. Cornel DaCosta
Dr Cornel DaCosta, husband of Nancy, father of Joanna and Jessica passed away
suddenly on 10th September 2010 at King’s College Hospital, London, after
suffering a heart attack.
He loved life and was known to many - as a musician, teacher, academic and
writer. Above all he was known to people as a dear friend and always made time
to keep these friendships alive. He suffered from arthritis for many years
which gave him severe pain but he rarely complained and always maintained a
positive outlook.
He was born in Mombasa, Kenya, completed schooling at the Goan High School,
followed by Teacher training in Mombasa. During this time he developed a
passion for music, playing the saxophone in dance bands.
He travelled to the UK in 1962 for further study. He studied and lived in
London which he found to be a wonderful cosmopolitan city full of culture. He
obtained several qualifications including a PhD and a Diploma in International
Affairs.
He had a passion for education, in particular higher education and teacher
training. He taught at the Institute of Education, University of London, the
Middlesex University and at the University of East London, teaching students
from undergraduate to PhD level.
In 1981, Cornel with his colleague Colin Mably, founded the International
Society for Teacher Education (ISTE). This society was highly successful in
promoting international collaborative work among academics and students.
Indeed, this year Cornel travelled to South America for the 30th Annual Seminar
and met with many colleagues and friends.
He co-authored 3 textbooks on higher education with K Gokulsing, his colleague,
and has attended many international conferences and presented many papers. He
was also Professor of Education at Florida State University and supervised
American students on secondment to London. Cornel travelled widely and was
actively engaged in the Goan community, writing articles for the Goan Voice
(UK) and Goanet.
He moved with his family to Petts Wood, Kent in 1986 where he lived for 24
years.
The loss of Cornel to his family and friends has been immense. The pain has
been made more bearable by the support from his close friends and the many
condolences his family have received since his death.
