(A letter sent on 15/9/2010 that may never be published)

I am surprised that village groups had to descend into Panjim to highlight the
massive destruction of mangroves on the periphery of the city precincts as
reported in your newspaper (15/9/2010). Not that I am sympathetic to publicity
seekers, but recently some residents of Panjim were quick to criticise people
who came from the villages to support the cause of car washers around the
municipal garden. And here we had criminal activities in mangrove areas being
carried out for several years but surprisingly there has not been a whimper of
protest from the proclaimed environmentalists in the city.
For the last several months, a city restaurant has been releasing waste water
every morning in the drain outside Varsha Book Stall which is causing a stink
from stagnation, but there is no protest whatsoever. We do not believe that no
environmentalist from the city comes to that location to pick up their daily
newspaper. Or, is it that only certain type of environment violations, which
are in vogue globally, become our cause for concern?
