We have had a lot of bad press and TV reports lately about the debacle of the Commonwealth Games. Yes, things have not gone right, at all.
But lets look at the other side of the coin.......... India is a vibrant democracy with a free press and electronic media. Very little if any can be swept under the carpet. If this was an authoritarian country (I leave that to your imiaginations), nothing would be reported in the press, and those accused of wrongdoings would be summarily tried and executed. The world would only see one side of the coin.......the successful implementation of the event. The world will never know of all the problems that led up to the event. It is precisely because India is a democracy with wide dissemination of the news, that we read and see about all the problems associated with the Commonwealth Games. I am expressing this view to give some balance to the one-sided criticism of the planning and organization of the Commonwealth Games. I wish more exposure would be given to the positives, including some of the world class facilities that were finished in time, and have great aesthetic appeal.
