Tiatr ‘Then and now’

Literary it means ’Yesterday and Today’
As the title suggests, it is indeed  a two part presentation
i.e the period  say upto 1970s and as of now.
To the left of the stage – a typical household of bygone era
A father (Mathias Marcarenhas) with two young daughters
(Violet and Vhorty) with their uncle ‘Tiva’ (Anthony Carvalho)
The children with old fashioned dresses ‘vistid’ etc
When the church bells rings all family get together to say Angelus or Aimori.
When the priest or Pe. Vigar (Sucoro de Sta Cruz) with complete cassock
visits the household, every one kisses the priest hand and addressed hin as
‘Pativ’
(What exactly we did upto 70s)
Having ‘Pez’ or Canji (Except we had in Kanso or Bowls), a typical
‘Olotor’  (Except we had in the centre above) see pic  etc etc
The two little girls now grown up (Joycelyn Misquita and Simonia Cardozo)
One got married and when she visited her father/Sistr she come with red ‘vistid’
the one usually worn by newly married bride ‘Salleacho vistid?” see pic
She comes back with the complaint of her hard to handle mother-in-law (sasumaim)
After reconciliation by the father/sister, the daughter happily returns back to
her in-laws.
Father is now old and sick –  Unable to walk on his own
In order not to cause any more burden to his daughters, he express his desire
to join any old age home.
With all the support and fervent assurances he got from  his daughters,
the father finally changes his mind and decides never to leave home or
the daughters.
The scene when daughters pleading their father never to think of leaving house
etc was really touching and brought tears amongst the packed audience.

On the other hand, to the right of the stage there live a modern household
A typical of present day era.
Mother (Irene Cardoz) and her two kids ( Daughter Josepha &  Son
Karan Bhagkar) and their cook (Sheik Amir) - See pic
Little Karan shown busy  playing on his computer PC – see Pic
Konkani speaking mother now all the time  speak (broken) or red
English not only with her children but with the cook too.
No Konkani in the house at all- Everything western style
Typical present day breakfast with Jam, butter etc , getting late to
school/bus  etc shown.
Grown up son  is now Shivanand Naik and the daughter Larisa Fernandes.
This side of the household, when the evening church bell rings, there is
no Angelus or ‘Aimori’ but disco instead,  in which  the mother  too
takes part to the tune of her favourite song 'Waka Waka' .
Someone rings the door bell, as usual no one likes to answer the door
so it’s the cook as always, who does the job.  He come back to say ‘there
is a young handsome man’ to which not only the girl but the mother too
runs at the door – Only to find out the young man was none other than
the church Padr. Kur  (Ass. Priest in plain cloths –Zico Fernandes)
The son too compliments the priest saying ‘you look hero with that T shirt’
Daughter get married  and soon come home with bags and baggage
saying she cant put up with her mother in law and husband too
takes mother's side.
No reconciliation but instead mother/son phoning a layer to file
divorce papers.

The mother is not young anymore now, infact she is sick and  in
her wheelchair.
No more English  talking now or all back to Konkani.
But her only son and the daughter have some surprises for her
Everything well planned beforehand and on the day, they both reveal
their plan to their mother.
Daughter says ‘You have to, there is no other way’
Son goes even further ‘ You have to and you have to do it now, right now’
Packed bags are ready so do the Abulance outside the door to take her
to the Old age home.
The shocked mother cries and cries ‘I don’t want to go, I don’t want to go,
I want to stay here, I want to die here’
The scene was again very very touching and I am sure it made every sensible
person cry.

KAL ANI AIZ the tiatr wriiten and directed by Tomazinho Cardozo
(Kala Mogi, Candolim) was the 5th show in the ongoing 36th Tiatr Competition at
Kala Academy. Staged on 29th Sept.2010

Had 11 songs which had not only trio and Quartet but quintet too.
Tomazin Cardoso, dressed as ‘Patrakar’ in his opening ‘KAL ani AIZ’
says  ‘Aiz Goem bhorlam Goem bhailea lokani’
(Goa today is full of outsiders)
Socoro de Sta. Cruz with his daughter Sonia at their best as usual.
(with Solo & Duet)
Trio by Tomazinho, Larisa and Fiona. Fathers reveals his plan
to re-marry despite having two grown-up girls
Another Trio by child artists Violet, Joshepha and Vhorty –
a patriotic song well received by the audience.
Duet by Maria Cardoz and Joao Cardoz was good too
Quartet by Assis, Joycelyn, Simonia and Mathias where 3 come for
film auditioning was my favourite.
A solo by young Violet d’ Souza, looking for  her type of 'Nouro’
bagged Joegoauk’s best prize for best singing in the child category.
Maria Cardozo in her solo singing/dancing always brings colour to the show
Quintet by Maria, Joao, Josepha, Vhorti and Violet where
the 3 daughters ask their Parents to try for a brother – very hilarious.
Sheik Amir in his solo sang ‘Patmari’ in M Boyer’s style

Besides, there were two politicians roles Viz.
Tukaram Naik and Assis Cardozo

JoeGoaUk’s best prize for best acting again goes to
Mathias Mascrenhas
(Which also includes some marks from the Quartet singing as Hritik Roshan/Style)

Well, this is the troupe whose tiatr ‘AKXIDENT’  won top prize last year.
I must admit, during the show, I too joined others when they said
‘This one is not as good as last one’
However, as said, the last poddo (of the total 6), a powerful and
thought provoking  presentation on both side of the
stage/households could change it all.
Will leave it to the judges.
Every  one was at their best though, one or two places, overacting is a
lso noticed.
The two daughters acting was quite natural and deserves full marks
Extra:
The  tiatr had some glitches on technical sides.
In the very beginning, during the opening chorus song, there was
sound problem.
People keep on shouting ‘Sound Sound’  and the singer went on
singing (completed nearly half) until he stopped. He asked ‘can you
hear now?’  the response was even louder ‘No’.
It had to bring down the curtain to allow fixing the problem which
took about 15 minutes..
Some people from the back shouted ‘deduct marks’
But the KA rep was quick to come to the Judges to say
‘it is not their fault, so no any deductions nor it should affect the
set time limitation, take it afresh’
(It’s the same KA man who cannot even pronounce the Tiatr Titles
properly and who once said
‘Keep you mobiles and children on silent mode’
Looks like they thought they would go hi- tech in their tiatr this time
by not using the mic on the stands infront, instead they had it
on the floor (mini wired  microhones).
It may be reminded that this technique already been tried in the earlier
Tiatr competition (2008?) and was a total failure.
Despite restoring the sound / mic back on stands, it appears that the problem
was never fully resolved. Lighting too seems not bright enough

Many tiatr personalities seen such as Prince Jacob, Ben Evangelisto,
Anil-Fatima etc

The tiatr  was houseful an hour before the show

Note: I may not be a good reviewer
Likes and dislikes differ from person to person.
e.g. Latest Salman Khan  Bollywood film ‘Dabangg’
wasn’t of my taste at all yet it has beaten ‘3 idiots’
See what I mean?
