Tiatr ‘Storm’ To the left of the stage there is a typical house/hut belonging to a fisherman community with a hut, benches, a holy (wooden) cross infront of the house etc
Minguel (Derrick D’Mello) with his four children eldest one Clara (Gemma Fernandes), Eldest son Peter (Aliston Pereira), daughter Rosy (Shenaya Pereira) and the youngest son Simao (Cameron Fernandes). Typical BPL (Below Poverty Line) family. Clara also helps to run home by conducting tuition classes at home. To the right, there is a Landlord House. Sole occupant of the house is the aged/sick/disabled helpful and god fearing landlord Adolf (Jack D’Souza) always by his table/desk where he keeps all the money in the drawer. There is also ‘a holy Bible’ on a separate stand. Minguel being also munndkar (Tenant) looks after the sick landlord (earlier, Minguel’s wife also looked after the bedridden Landlady). The Landlord is ever so grateful to Minguel’s family for taking care of them The landlords dies and Minguel now looks after the house. One month later, there come Shakira (Steffi Pereira) from Portugal with her husband Julio (Basilio Carvalho). Sakira claims she is the Niece of late Adolf and only legal heir to landlord’s estate. Shakira come with plans. First to register the property in her name with the help of the corrupt Sarpanch (Shirish Naik) then to sell it to the highest bidder. But there is a problem. The buyer wants the entire property with no tenants. Sarpanch with the help of goondas and threats to finish Minguel’s entire family if he did not sign the document and leave the house within 4 days... Minguel had no other options. Before Minguel leaves the house for good, visits his landlord’s house for the last time not to say goodbye but to get his gift ‘Holy Bible’ which landlord told him to take after his death. Did the sarpanch or Sakira get what they wanted? Did Minguel leave his house? Faith. Loyalty etc can conquer anything – Even if it is a storm no matter how big VADOLL a tiatr by Derrick d’Mello (Serula Art & CultureAcademy, Penha-de France) was staged today the 11th October 2010 at Kala Academy which was the 10th (of the 21) in the ongoing All Goa 36th Tiatr Competition This troupe won 2nd Prize last year. This time there were 5+4 child artistes. Although Cameron and Shenaya did well but sometimes it appeared that they were acting oversmart. Meaning, some dialogues were not fitted for their ages. e.g Talk of Romi Lipi etc Gemma Fernandes as a typical elder sister’s role did well. Derrick too was good (Sometimes, over acting noted) Adolf, the sick Landlord (Jack D’Souza) although did a brief role, his acting was so natural and deserves full marks. Stage setting, particularly the fisherman’s home was good and gets full marks. Tiatr also had audio-visual part where a scene near Brittona was shown on the left side wall of the auditorium. A storm with canoes and trawlers in river Mandovi. After the interval, all the names of artists were also shown (normally this is done over the Mic back stage). JoeGoaUk’s top prize for acting jointly goes to Gemma, Cameron and Shenaya There were about 8.5 songs. (as one song abandoned half way due to FLs (forgotton lyrics) Xavier Almeida was the only person who sang once (the opening) Most others sang/appeared up to 3 times. Other singers were: Steffi Pereira (2), Leslie D’Souza, Philomena Afonso, Shenaya Pereira (3), Cameron Fernandes (2), Anthony D’Souza (2), Francis Fernandes (2) & Aliston Pereira (2) A trio by Steffi/Philomena/Leslie on the yester years tiatrists including M Boyer, Jacint Vaz, Prem Kumar, Rosario Rodrigues, JP Souzalin, Bab Peter, Miguel Rod etc was good. – see pic So also Shanaya’s solo dressed as Kunnbi – see pic and Cameron’s Solo on Religious Violence in Orissa where priests and nuns were attacked. Comedy solo by Anthony D’Souza was also good. – see pic Extra: This tiatr was houseful 8 hours before the show. (It may be noted that, in many cases, upto 400 tickets are bought/taken by the troupes themselves. Divar troupe also had about 350 where as there is one notorious group from Merces who takes all the tickets in the past 3 years except last year) KA too has about 35 seats reserved for it staff/delegates/SCs As said, the quartet had to be abandoned midway as two of the four had problems of FLs.
