282 Goan Haj pilgrims to leave for Saudi on Monday

HERALD REPORTER/PANJIM, OCT 22

A journey of a thousand miles to Saudi Arabia will embark on Monday when a
batch of 282 Goan Haj Pilgrims will be flown to holy place of Madina. Goa State
Haj Committee (GSHC) vice chairman Abdul Rehman Khan told Herald that Hajis
will board the first flight to Madina from Dabolim on Monday evening.

“The committee has geared up to facilitate the departure from the state to the
holy place. The flight will take off at 7pm from Dabolim international airport
and proceed to Madina,” he said.

Madina is the second holy place of Islam where the last prophet of Islam
Mohammed S A S was asked to migrate. Muslim scholars say that He settled there
and preached Islam although he had to face stiff opposition, and from Madina,
Islam spread throughout Gulf and other parts of the globe.

Khan said that Haj pilgrims have been asked to assemble at Masjid-e-Noor at
Bogmado near the Airport terminus. “Most of the formalities will be completed
here and Hajis will be provided will all travel documents and necessary
instructions. While, on Saturday we have asked all Hajis to report at the GSHC
office,” he informed.

Haj is the biggest gathering of around 40 lakh followers of Islam from across
the world. The vice chairman stated that Government of Saudi Arabia has made
comprehensive arrangements for stay and performing rituals by Haj pilgrims.
Haj Committee of India deputes around 1.25 lakh pilgrims and 45, 000 pilgrims
perform Haj through private agencies.

“In all, around 1.70 lakh Indian Haj pilgrims will be performing Haj this
year,” Khan said. Haj is a five day pilgrim which is performed in and around
Makkah.
