The numerous scams, the fall of bridges, the mosquitoes and the illnesses they spread, missing the deadlines, the lack of hygiene, even though the levels of hygiene are different for different people according to our overbearing "Netas", the success of the Commonwealth games was phenomenal and to top it all, it was a moment of great joy and pride for every Indian, as the Indian contingent showed it's best results in international sports. My best wishes and hoorays to all the Indian Athletes.
Now with the fires of wild celebrations slowly dying down, the scavengers are being put over the still red hot embers. It is indeed good to know that all the investigating agencies are involved in this investigation along with the Shunglu Committee <http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Shunglu%20committee> . We are all aware of how far and how high the conduits of corruption have reached, for sure, it's not going to be easy. Will the obdurate and corrupt government machinery allow the investigation to move smoothly and put their own necks in the noose ? The chances are minimal but I do hope this investigation does not die a premature death and a burial in some unknown archive like many past investigations. People's fury at the massive corruption at the organizing of the Commonwealth Games was yet to die, when the ugly head of another scam at the Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society was unearthed. Purportedly meant for the Widows of Kargil Martyr's, the prime land ended up being a discretionary largesse of our ever charming Netas and their stooges, with a veritable who's who in politics, defense and bureaucratic establishments, from ex-service chiefs to top politicians, babus and their kin. Corruption is the monstrous evil that's embedded in our political and eco-social sphere where a plethora of procedures and laws are violated and transgressed with very little thought or no thought at all. In the past no action has been taken and the guilty have been vindicated and allowed to abuse their political power and patronage. The rot has been systematic and the remedy must be more than, just finding a scapegoat. The nexus between the Politicians, Servicemen and the promoters and builders is very much evident, security aspects were apparently not adhered to. The scale of corruption and the involvement of even the senior Services Personnel is frightening. The lacunae in the laws should be plugged and the guilty punished. Those responsible should be invariably taken to task and made an example off, to deter a repeat of such fiascos. We all know that scams in India and more so in Goa, are nothing new and I won't be wrong in saying that they are fast becoming a way of life, if not already a part of our lives. Land scams in Goa have become daily occurrences in every part of Goa, the security number plates scam not too long a go, is still an ongoing saga and ofcourse the ticket-gate scam number one and two, the latest, are just a few among many many others. What happened to the ticket-gate scam one ? It's beyond any ones imagination why such scamsters are still holding such elite posts ? It is common knowledge that the kids of his well wisher and boot lickers are somehow included in the teams, whereas talent is ignored and at times careers are threatened by the high and mighty scamster himself. It's a real pity that sports and development has been left in the hands of such unworthy and corrupt people. SEZ and CRZ are the other big scams, the resurrected RP 2021 is still in hibernation even after a good number of assurances by the Ali Baba of the forty thieves. Even then we do nothing but elect the same rotten, incompetent, shameless, corrupt and distorted politicians over and over again, even while they have been selling Goa to the highest bidder. We have issued them the license and now they are on rampage. Now the scam called Municipal elections. These recent municipal elections reminded me of my days in College, a friend of mine was eyeing a pretty girl in the junior college, all tries were futile as all his approaches were abruptly cut off, so he veered of the main course and concentrated on the girl's younger brother who was her pet, once he befriended the brother, everything fell in place. The same way, our corrupt politicians to amass and increase their already inflated personal fortunes, try to assert their power in Municipal and Panchayat elections. The Panchayati Raj and the Municipal governance was establish for the participation at grass-root level and established as independent bodies without any interference or involvement of the local and the central government, but the good old doctrine of self governance has been hijacked by our "Neta babus" and made it their own play cum parking ground, for their own political and financial gains. These elections only serve to reinforce the money power of the entrenched corrupt elites. There has been endemic corruption in political and bureaucratic circles in Goa The political parties get themselves involved at the grass-root level elections, to try and establish their power bastions at ever nuke and corner of the state, because of their greed to become the richest and the most powerful by means more foul than fair. Our politicians of today have joined politics not to serve Goa and Goans but have their own agendas, with eyes on the large funds and grants that these grass-root level civic bodies get and the power that these bodies enjoy over granting of NOC's to the so called developmental projects that attract, not the good Goans but the bad and the ugly of the whole wide world, which is detrimental to the wellbeing of Goa and Goans. Political parties should not be bickering over The Panchayats and the Municipalities and casting their corrupt ideologies over them, these grass-root civic bodies should be run the way they were meant to be run, independent of the political manipulators. The involvement of the Politicians at grass-root politics raises more questions than answers. We are indeed an indifferent electorate, that's why our Politicians foist their litter on us. "Kasam se, hum Goavale ajeeb kisam ke log haim." Even the Municipal and Panchayat elections are getting increasingly delinquent and dangerous, some of our ministers and ex-ministers were seen physically manhandling each other. The soaring eagles of fame can so easily turn into vultures, strong arm tactics were used, money and goodies were distributed like sweets during the festive season. Looking at the very strong security presence on high alert, it looked like there was a communal flare-up all over Goa. We have been having elections in Goa for nearly forty years, apart from the Opinion polls we have never had any problem and now for Municipality elections we have top notch security. Where is Goa heading ? Looks like, it's the dawn of a new era. Greed for power and money can bring the worst out into the open. Reading about the power sharing amalgamation formed in the different Municipalities, has bemused me to no end. The Alemao brothers seem to have become Conductors of the Symphonies called Sanguem and Cuncolim Municipalities. Our Ali Baba has been directing the Symphony called the Margao Municipality, with batons in their hands, the cords have been set to give the right notes for the next five years, driven by unavoidable exigencies, members of alliances will play the musical chairs for the next five years for the hot seats or will they ? Hold on to the power by all means is the mantra of the day, it doesn't matter how idiotic it looks. Every Tom, Dick and Harry, working through a coterie, is looking and hoping for the chief's edifice, behaving like petulant kids, typifying the rot within and making loyalty an imbecile's begging bowl. Troubled by past dalliances, trust has been abandoned with impunity, there will always be inconsistency and incessant squabbling but they are willing to cohabit with anybody and everybody, as long as it suits them and with the lure of future extramarital romances, it's advisable to negotiate divorce terms well in advance, without the door being shut on the option of a remarriage, as an impasse would be suicidal for all. This is called prudent politics. All this only goes to show, just how greedy our politicians are for power and money.
