Hey Jude, don’t make it bad Take a good song and make it better By Cecil Pinto
Last Thursday I performed at the Kala Academy. Yes performed, along with at least a thousand other people and the Fab Four on stage. A tribute band named Cavern Beatles gave a fantastic performance and the entire audience sang along. There were actually fourteen people who did not know some of the lyrics and a hundred and eighteen who were not continually mouthing the words but all the rest, like me, were performing along. I was also playing my air-guitar. Do not read further, just sing along with me! Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds Picture yourself in a car near the harbour, With green denim jeans and polka dot ties Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly, A tall moustached man with angry eyes. Orange bandana with glints of green, He’s towering over your head. Look for the bodyguard or maybe a waiter And he’s gone. Mickey at the bar with banknotes! Mickey at the bar with banknotes! With a Little Help From My Friends What would you think if I talked all the while, Would you dare to walk out on me? Lend me your ears or I’ll hang you to dry, I’ve just got to talk constantly. I don’t need any help from my friends, I don’t need any help from my friends, I got the CM and my father with me. I don’t need anybody, I can do it all on my own. Bicholim, Valpoi, Sattari It’s time I claimed my throne The high priced seats of Rs. 2000/- and more were almost entirely taken up by Free Pass holding members of the press, or friends of sponsors, or associates of the organizers. Most people paid an average of Rs. 1000/- for a ticket. Do the math. I can’t understand why more Event Managers don’t bring in such shows, at cheaper prices for us lower middle-class folks, and still rake in big money. One newspaper as a Media Partner and a few sponsors. It’s a pretty easy formula - not exactly rocket science. Nowhere Man He’s a real Has-Been Man, Sitting on the Planning Board, Making all his grandiose plans for nobody. Of course he has a point of view, Knows well what he wants to do, Isn't he a bit like you and me? Has-Been Man please listen, We all know what you're missing, Has-Been Man, you don’t have a High Command. He's as stubborn as he can be, Just sees what he wants to see, Dr. Willy can you hear me at all? Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band We're Goa’s Rotten Current Ministers We hope you will enjoy the show, We're Goa’s Rotten Current Ministers Sit back and watch the show. Goa’s Rotten Current, Goa’s Rotten Current, Goa’s Rotten Current Ministers The Cavern Beatles went through three impressive costume changes that showed the evolution of the Beatles. They did get the audience to dance and sing along, but considering the mostly middle-aged audience it was less Beatlemania Hysteria and more Goan Seventies Nostalgia. Here Comes the Sun Here come the sons, here come the sons, Brothers, wives and daughters. Wake up Goan, it’s been a long time since you voted, Wake up Goan, give some fresh new blood a chance. Here come the sons, here come the sons, Brothers, wives and daughters Ticket to Ride I think I'm gonna retire, I think it's today, yeah, My wife is going to stand, And that is the end. She's got a ticket to stand, She's got a ticket to stand, She's got a ticket to stand, and her ward’s reserved. Do You Want to Know a Secret You'll never know how much I really earn, You'll never know how much I really make. Listen, do you want to know a secret, Do you promise not to tell, Whoa… Closer, let me whisper in your ear, Say the words you rarely hear, I'm a miner too, ewww…I'm a miner too Almost every long term Brit resident of Goa was there in the audience and many other foreigners too, as can be expected. For one song a line of four British looking women got up sportily and swayed and sang along. A far cry from the roaring Seventies, when dozens of young girls would be throwing their panties on to the stage. Yesterday Yesterday, all Goa’s troubles seemed so far away Now it looks as though they're here to stay Oh, I believed in GBA Suddenly, It’s not half the force it used to be There’s a shadow hanging over it Oh, GBA fell suddenly Why Oscar had to go I don't know, he doesn’t say I see something wrong, how I long for GBA Let It Be When I find myself in times of trouble High Command comes to me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be. And in my hour of darkness It is standing right in front of me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be. Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be, Listen to the High Command, let it be. And then the spineless buffoons Governing Goa will agree, Listen to the High Command, let it be. A whole lot of popular Beatles numbers were not played and the concert ended rather early but I guess that was because it had been raining all day and the skies could burst any moment. “While My Meter Gently Weeps” by the South Goa Tourist Taxi Drivers Association, “The Long and Winding Road” by the National Highway Diversion Action Committee, “I Wanna Have Your Hand” by the Congress -I Ticket Aspirants Group. -------- The column above appeared in Gomantak Times dated 11th November 2010 ==== _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ _/ _/ tambdimati: the Goa review is a community blog of original _/ art, writing, music, news and commentary from and about the _/ smallest state in the subcontinent. check out the newest _/ member of the Goanet family daily at _/ http://www.tambdimati.com. _/ _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/
