Our Goan Spirit Is At Stake

Goa today is in dire need of a long term strategy built within the precincts of
an agenda of constructive development, economic improvement and political
involvement at the grassroots level, especially in rural and backward areas of
Goa, even then it should not dilute the essence of our true Goan Identity. In
the name of development Goa is being sold to the highest bidder, by the elected
elite for their own selfish enrichment and we Goans are feeling extremely
alienated in our very own land.

There are myriad reasons why Goans feel a sense of alienation in Goa today. It's
certainly not esoteric nor instant and ephemeral either, it's been caused by the
ever increasing amalgamation of greed and arrogance built around themselves by
the self-centered elected fraternity, which unfortunately looks to have become a
part of our intricate lives. We Goans do feel let down by our very own smooth
talking, fork-tongued politicians.

The precipitous decline in principles and morals is not just confined to our
elected members but to the overall functioning of the government, as a result of
which a lot of people are compulsively baying for the blood of our corrupt
politicians, unfortunately they are neither moved by its impact nor repelled by
its horror. They know that money is the key to their power and progress.
Populism is only a tyranny where votes can be bought at a drop of a hat.

We have been subjected to the most acrimonious and cantankerous administration
in Goa's history, these power hungry politicians, who are unambiguously regarded
as swindlers and scamsters, have desecrated Goan politics into a cesspool of
corruption and mayhem. They have espoused twisted logic for their skewed
perspectives, full of lies, deceit, inefficiency and callousness. Each one of
them driven entirely by the same set of compulsions, mired in greed and voracity
that should have been thwarted at every opportunity, by a respectful system of
governance. Their cockeyed perspectives are never articulate or lucid and not to
be trusted.

They will do everything possible to subjugate the truth, but truth cannot be
subdued for long, it has already started coming out of the woodwork. They love
to blow their trumpets to magnify their lackluster performances, believing that
they are achievements and deliver trite banalities without a cringe or even a
twinge. It's ostensibly just another way to bamboozle us Goans. Nothing ever
touches them except the lucre. Our electing them, have been misconstrued as a
license to shoot, scoot and loot as they fail to realize that being elected does
not grant them the license to be licentious and corrupt.

Why are Goans so willing to circumvent, the fact that Goa is indeed heading for
doom ? Running away from the truth will get us nowhere. We have to hold
ourselves responsible for having abdicated our responsibility to elect good,
forthright, honest and committed men and women to run Goa. What conjures up an
air of sadness is not just the quality that's elected, but the apathy for
redemption and rectification of the wrong that we did and above all the pride
with which call ourselves true blue blooded Goans. The writing on the wall is
abundantly clear - if we, Goans who love Goa, pretend that everything is okay,
or look the other way, we do so at our own peril.

If we desire a change, we do need to have a healthy dose of pragmatism, as well
as be the change that we need to be. We need to reject the regressive, look to
change the present tradition of opacity and make governance a transparent
process, wherein accountability creates cohesive and equitable governance. Even
if we know that we are on the right track, we could get run over, if we just sit
right there. We have to make our move. The past and more so the present regimes
are responsible for the devastation and degeneration of Goa, and the present
scenario, brings out a question, what should we fear most, harmful thoughts from
harmless minds or harmless thoughts from a harmful minds ? Time has really come
to take initiatives to get us out of this morass. We have to respond tangibly to
save what's left of Goa for posterity.

Now is the time to address the task ahead of us and get our priorities right,
our sleeves should not be meant to hang our emotions on but should be folded up
to address the task that's ours to perform. Building a bridge over our
dilapidated past will not be easy. The only thing that stands between a person
and what he wants in life, is the will to try it and the faith to believe it's
possible, so we have to be unflinching in our resolve and our mission,
undistracted by extraneous seductions that will be thrown in our face. We should
in no way consider it prudent to take a backseat and watch from the side lines
at this juncture. It's time to rein in our virtuosity now or it would be
tantamount to killing our very Goan Spirit, the legacy that we inherited from
our forefathers. The spirit of being Goans and our distinct Goan Identity.

It's choice and not chance that should determine our destiny. History records
various events where greatness was sacrificed at the alter, and mediocrity
selected for the crown, are we Goans going to let history repeat itself ? It's
ours to answer !
