I have no idea how someone with some knowledge about cancer can jump to this
conclusion after been shown a stray news paper item on Egyptian mummies.

In the interest of providing accurate information, let me point out that there
indeed are cancers that are caused by inherited and acquired mutations of tumor
suppressor genes, as well as oncogenes. Here is a brief description of them
from a reliable source:

What is more, the claim that Egyptian mummies did not have cancer is also not
true. Here are two earlier studies that had discovered cancer in 5000 year old
mummies of Egypt:

1. Zink A, Rohrbach H, Szeimies U, Hagedorn HG, Haas CJ, Weyss C, Bachmeier B,
Nerlich AG. Malignant tumors in an ancient Egyptian population. Anticancer Res.
1999 Sep-Oct;19(5B):4273-7.

2. Nerlich AG, Rohrbach H, Bachmeier B, Zink A., Malignant tumors in two
ancient populations: An approach to historical tumor epidemiology, Oncol Rep.
2006 Jul;16(1):197-202.

Indeed, the above study concluded that there was no significant difference in
the incidence of the particular types of cancer detected between these ancient
and modern populations in comparable age groups. Any perceived increased
incidence today is therefore likely to be due to increased life expectancy.

Cheers,

Santosh
