Mashem, December 11: While exhorting the youth to discover the pleasures of exercising the mind, Director and film personality, Mr. Indranil Chakraborthy, pointed out that our cultures are increasingly becoming visual. “The visual image is dominating the written word and we are reduced to passive recipients,” he said.

He further observed that “The anxiety about a perceived threat to ones language is understandable but the real battleground is how to sensitise people, particularly the youth, to be active and to keep the mind and imagination alive. It is here that literature plays a very significant role in that it opens our minds to a new world beyond our limited perceptions of the people and the world around us.” He also urged the youth to read religious literature for a wider perspective on life and living and use the electronic media, which has not diminished but facilitated the spread of the written word like never before, to full advantage.

Mr Chakraborty was speaking after inaugurating the XII Yuva Konkani Sahitya Sammelan at Shri Nirakar Education Society’s S S Angle Higher Secondry School, Mashem, Canacona on Saturday. The two-day sahitya sammelan is organized jointly by S S Angle Higher Secondary School and Goa Konkani Academy with over 300 budding youth writers from Goa, Mangalore and Karwar trying to find an expression and direction to their writing potential under the guidance of eminent writers from the state.

Mr Shridhar Kamat the President of the Sammelan speaking on the occasion said that something that flows from the heart is the best literature that knows no boundaries.

Mr. N Shivdas, President of Goa Konkani Academy and a well known Konkani writer said “The late Ravindra Kelekar did the honour of Jnanpit Award to Konkani literature. Now, it is for the Konkani youth to strive hard to go a few paces ahead and win the Nobel Prize to give universal recognition for Konkani.

Mr Prashant Naik, President of Konkani Bhasha Mandal and Chairman of Shree Nirakar Education Society rued the fact that established colleges are shying away from hosting this important event.

A short story collection by young writer Naresh Naik was also released on the occasion at the hands of Mr Chakraborty.

Mr. Kavindra Phaldesai was the Working President, Mr Hemant Kamat was the President of the Reception committee, while Mr Vassalho Carvalho was the Secretary of the Organising Committee. Anant Agni was the coordinator of the sammelan.

Distinguished Konkani Novelist, Mr. Damodar Mauzo, was also present on the occasion. Mr Mr Vassallo Carvalho proposed a vote of thanks. Students Aditi and Purna compered.
